Henry Ford Perfected the Mass Production of Cars—and Antisemitism

Henry Ford is known for revolutionizing automobiles, but he also produced antisemitism. Dan Schulman’s new book The Money Kings: The Epic story of the Jewish immigrants who transformed Wall Street and shaped modern America explains this. The book tells a story of the Gilded Age.

Although Henry Ford is credited with revolutionizing the auto industry, he also produced a lot of antisemitism.
In his most recent book, The Money Kings: The Epic Story of the Hebrew Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America, my colleague Dan Schulman explains this. A group of German-Jewish economic dynasties, including the families that founded Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers, who had a significant impact on the 20th century, are described in the book as the Gilded Age saga. Jacob Schiff, a well-known financier and philanthropist who competed with J. P. Morgan as the top investment banker of that era, is at the center of the narrative. Schiff left a legacy that can be seen in many facets of modern life, including the thriving Jewish community that his philanthropy helped to support, despite the fact that he is never properly remembered today.
There was even a tragic element to the tale of Schiff and his allies, who would go on to play key roles in racist conspiracy theories that are still around today.
I just had a conversation with Schulman about some of the ways Schiff’s legacy is still relevant today, and he told me about something I found specifically fascinating: Henry Ford was obsessed with German-Jewish bankers, which helped the automaker spread racist propaganda over the course of many years through his weekly newspaper, The Dearborn Independent. Schulman notes that over the course of seven years,” this paper persistently attacked Jews—it blamed Jews not just for wars and economic panics but also things like wrecking American baseball.” Schiff and his associates in Kuhn Loeb’s investment bank were numerous targets.
Here’s where things change for the worse. The International Jew: The World’s Foremost Problem is the four-volume collection of anti-Jewish writings by The Dearborn Independent. Worldwide, millions of copies were printed, including in Germany. A portrait of Ford and a stack of copies of The International Jew were also on the walls of Adolf Hitler’s office, which the New York Times reporter visited in 1922. According to Schulman, Hitler and the Nazis distributed millions of copies. Henry Ford was” a Nazi muse in a very real way.” Ford not only helped to sow the seeds of contemporary racist conspiracy theories about Jewish power but also had an impact on Germany’s murderous leader thanks to the Indepedents ‘ attacks on Schiff and other Jews. Understanding the causes and background of this hatred and bigotry is more crucial than previously as antisemitism rises once more.
Schulman’s book is the ideal tale for the present and is available on both physical and electronic shelves. Although Henry Ford is credited with revolutionizing the auto industry, he also produced a lot of antisemitism. In his most recent book, The Money Kings: The Epic Story of the Hebrew Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America, my colleague Dan Schulman explains one of these things. The tale of the Gilded Age is told in the book.

Henry Ford is widely recognized for revitalizing the automobile industry, however there is another issue he mass produced: anti-Judaism. This is discussed by my associate Dan Schulman in his brand-new publication, The Money Kings: The Epic Narrative of the Jewish Immigrants Who Revitalized Wall Street and Shaped Modern America. This book chronicles a historic chapter of the Gilded Age, following a group of families of German-Jewish descent who established Goldman Sachs and Lehman Brothers and had a strong impact on the course of the 20th century. The narrative revolves around Jacob Schiff, a widely respected financial investor and donor compared to J.P. Morgan in terms of his banking accomplishments in that period. Schiff’s impacts can still be felt today even though he is not commonly remembered. For example, his generous donations in support of Judaism have been credited with helping to develop the vibrant Jewish community that exists in the present day. I had the pleasure of speaking with Schulman about some of the effects that Schiff’s legacy has had to the present day. One of the more interesting points Schulman made was that Henry Ford was fascinted by German-Jewish bankers, which then led to The Dearborn Independent’s weekly newspaper publishing and spreading anti-Semitic beliefs. For a period of seven years, this particular newspaper constantly criticized Jews, accusing them of causing wars and economic instability, as well as destroying American baseball. This was pointed out by Schulman. Schiff and the people in his investment firm, Kuhn Loeb, were frequently criticized. Well, here’s where things get interesting.
