At least 33 transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have been slain in America since last November, according to a statement issued Monday by the Human Rights Campaign, America’s major LGBTQ+ rights organization. The report draws attention to the alarming “epidemic of violence” that trans and gender-nonconforming people, especially young Black transgender women, experience. It is likely that the figure of fatalities is underestimating the true amount, the report claims, given that data of violence towards trans and gender-nonconforming individuals tends to be “sporadic or unreliable.” A large proportion of killings aren’t recorded, and the victims are often not listed as transgender on police accounts. In a statement, the president of Human Rights Campaign, Kelley Robinson, termed this as an epidemic of violence versus the transgender and gender-nonconforming people, and labeled it a disgrace for the entire nation. Every single death due to this is an unfortunate event ― a symptom of a system that disrespects and undervalues anyone who opts not to confine themselves to the traditional gender roles. On Monday, the 24th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, President Joe Biden released a statement in an attempt to commemorate the day. He described the amount of violence trans people face as completely “unacceptable.” Today, for Transgender Day of Remembrance we are made aware that we have not yet fulfilled our pledge, and we feel sorrow for the 26 transgender American citizens who have been killed this year, as stated by Biden. Every death caused by this issue is heartbreaking–and potentially, the number of people impacted is even greater, particularly those who are female and from a minority group.
