Guatemala’s far right are taking strong measures to block the ascension of Bernardo Arévalo, the nation’s progressive President-elect, to power. On November 17, the Guatemalan Attorney General’s office asked for the legal right to investigate Arévalo, Vice President Karin Herrera, and certain congressional representatives in relation to their support of student protests that occurred in 2021. This latest demonstration appears to be another flimsy and unlawful indictment [against Arévalo].
We can see here yet another frail and illegal charge [against Arévalo]. Marielos Chang, an independent political analyst, expressed to The Progressive that it was ridiculous. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is attempting to instill concern in the demonstrators through the arguments they have put forth. Since the shock outcome of the first round of the presidential election on June 25 when Arévalo was victorious, there has been a rise in aggression against the democratic process. Foes of Arévalo spread claims that he was a “communist” and a “menace to Christianity,” yet he overwhelmingly prevailed in the second round of voting on August 20 to become president. Pro-corruption and impunity prosecutors tried to convince people that there was a fraud, but the people responded by coming out in the streets to oppose the attempted coup.
