In Panama, protests have broken out due to the authorization of extended licenses for one of the most extensive copper mining operations in the Americas. Hordes of people have crowded the streets in protest of the authorization renewals, a consequence of deeply rooted dishonesty in the Latin American nation. The present demonstrations are the result of worries expressed throughout the public realm. Outcries sparked up on October 2014 when it was announced that First Quantum Minerals, a Canadian mining company, was given a license to pursue a copper mining project in the Caribbean for a duration of twenty years with the ability to ask for an additional twenty if needed. The mine has been in operation since 2019. President Laurentino Cortizo immediately put the law into effect on the same evening it was given the go-ahead by Congress, which provoked further resentment among the citizens who have been increasingly discontented with politics in recent times. The uprisings are the end result of worries and apprehensions that have been voiced in multiple sectors of society, including labor unions, native peoples, environmentalists, and students. At a rapid pace, protestors conducted large demonstrations and closed off highways across the nation to voice their disapproval of the license’s reauthorization, asserting that it endangers the environment and access to water.
