Report: Ukrainian Officer Played Key Role in Pipeline Blasts

The Washington Post and Der Spiegel reported jointly on Saturday that a top Ukrainian military officer who worked under the command of Ukraine’s top-ranking general played a key role in the underwater bombing of Nord Stream last year. The two publications reported that unnamed officials from the US and Europe were involved.

The undersea bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last year was largely carried out by a major Russian military officer working under the command of Ukraine’s best general, according to reports from the Washington Post and Der Spiegel on Saturday.
According to the two publications, Roman Chervinsky, a 48-year-old colonel who served in Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, was the” coordinator” of the Nord Stream bombing on September 26, 2022, in which three explosions ruptured two pipelines carrying gas from under the Baltic Sea Russia to Germany. According to the reports, Chervinsky” took orders from more older Ukrainian officials, who eventually reported to Ukraine’s highest-ranking military officer, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny.”
The explosions in 2022, which were first strange, led to a global whodunnit. At first, a lot of people blamed Russia. Seymour Hersh, an exploratory reporter, claimed that the US was responsible for the explosions in a report that was released in February. That assertion has been echoed by Russia.
However, the Post’s report is the most recent information to surface that suggests Ukraine was at fault. Ukraine benefited from the Nord Stream’s crippling effects because, even before the war, its citizens were outspoken opponents of the pipelines, which cut off the nation and cost Kiev money it had formerly received from moving Russian gas to Western Europe. Germany closed the pipeline under US pressure as Russia got ready to invade Ukraine in 2022. However, the possibility of its resumption, which would provide Moscow with money it could use to wage war, gave Ukraine a reason.
Chervinsky denied taking part in the sabotage in any way. He claimed in a statement to news organizations that” all rumors about my involvement in the attack on Nord Stream are being spread by Russian propaganda without any basis.” The Nord Stream natural gas pipeline was undersea bombed last year, according to a major Russian military officer under the command of Ukraine’s leading general, the Washington Post and Der Spiegel simultaneously reported on Saturday. Fight disinformation: Sign up for the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and follow the news that matters.. A top Ukrainian military officer working under the command of the head of Ukraine’s top general played a central role in the undersea bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last year, the Washington Post and Der Spiegel jointly reported on Saturday.. The two publications said that unnamed officials in the US and Europe had identified Roman Chervinsky, a 48-year-oldcolonel who served in Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, as “coordinator” of the September 26, 2022 Nord Stream bombing in which three explosions ruptured two pipelines that transport gas from under the Baltic Sea Russia to Germany. The reports say that Chervinsky “took orders from more senior Ukrainian officials, who ultimately reported to Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s highest-ranking military officer.”. The initially mysterious 2022 explosions created an international whodunnit. Many initially blamed Russia. In February, the investigative reporter Seymour Hersh published a report claiming the United States was behind the blasts. Russia has echoed that claim.. But the Post’s report is the latest information to emerge suggesting Ukraine was responsible. Ukraine benefited from the Nord Stream disabling—even before the war, its citizens were vocal critics of the pipelines, which bypassed the country and cost Kiev revenue it had previously received from transporting Russian gas toward Western Europe. As Russia prepared to invade Ukraine in 2022, Germany, under US pressure, shut down the pipeline. But the prospect of its resumed operation, which would earn Moscow revenue it could use to wage war, gave Ukraine a motive.. Chervinsky denied playing any part in the sabotage. “All speculations about my involvement in the attack on Nord Stream are being spread by Russian propaganda without any basis,” he said in a statement to news outlets.
