Supreme Court Finally Adopts a Code of Ethics. But It Has No Teeth.

The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it would adopt its first-ever code for ethics. This was in response to public pressure, following multiple reports of disclosure failures as well as justices receiving inappropriate gifts. The move, which characterized the scandals as “misunderstandings” at the high court, does not include a means of independent investigation.

In response to numerous reports of disclosure failures and justices receiving illegal gifts, the Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will adopt a first-ever code of ethics. However, the action, which seemed to label the great court scandals as “misunderstandings,” does not include a separate method of enforcement.
The justices wrote,” The lack of a Code, however, has given rise to the misconception that, in contrast to all other jurists in this nation, the Justices of this Court do not regard themselves as constrained by any ethical rules.” ” We are issuing this Code, which generally represents a codification of principles that we have much regarded as governing our conduct, to dispel this misunderstanding.”
Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor are two justices who have reportedly been accused of using their positions for specific gain over the years. The allegations against Clarence Thomas, whose supporters include billionaire GOP megadonor and Nazi artifact collector Harlan Crow, are the most shocking of all, though. ProPublica conducted a number of eye-opening investigations into Thomas ‘ opulent lifestyle and his wealthy supporters. A brief summary of one report is provided below:
According to ethics experts, Thomas appears to have broken the law by failing to disclose flights, yacht cruises, and pricey sports tickets, even though some of the hospitality, quite as stays in private homes, may not have required disclosure.
Experts, including seven current and former federal judges appointed by both parties, told ProPublica that the pattern exposes ongoing violations of administrative norms. Former federal judge Jeremy Fogel, who spent years on the judicial committee that examines judges ‘ financial disclosures, said,” In my career, I do n’t remember ever seeing this degree of largesse given to anyone.” ” I believe it to be unparalleled.”
The complete code of ethics is available above. In response to numerous reports of disclosure failures and justices receiving poor gifts, the Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will adopt a first-ever code of ethics. However, the action, which seemed to label the great court scandals as “misunderstandings,” does not include an impartial means.

Charles Dharapak/AP. On Monday, the Supreme Court publicly declared that it will now adhere to its first-ever code of conduct as a result of intense public demand spurred by numerous stories of lack of disclosure and judges being given inappropriate presents. Although the newly proposed measure is intended to resolve the disputes at the Supreme Court, it does not include an effective enforcement provision. As the justices pointed out, the lack of an official code of conduct has caused disputes in the past as people assumed that the justices were not held to the same standards as all the other judges. We are releasing this Code to clear up any confusion, which reflects a great deal of the values we have had for a long time in regards to our behavior. Throughout the passage of time, Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor have been chastised for possibly exploiting their roles for personal benefit. The most remarkable claims surrounding Clarence Thomas have been linked to Harlan Crow, who is a billionaire Republican benefactor and collector of Nazi items. ProPublica published a series of revealing reports on Thomas’ extravagant way of living, funded by his wealthy patrons. This is an overview of one report.
