Max and Gracie Hightower were present outside of the Sherman Independent School District board meeting on November 13th. Max was encouraging the educators of the district to allow him to enroll in school. Many years after graduating from college, Amy had accomplished many of her goals and dreams.

Thirteen years later, in 2023, Amy Hightower had realized her ambitions and was living out her aspirations. The Sherman Independent School District’s board of trustees has taken a significant step this week when they chose to unanimously allow a previously controversial decision to proceed – the performance of “Oklahoma” by Sherman High School. Not only will the show go on, but transgender students will play a lead role and the actors originally cut due to attire choices deemed not congruent with their assigned sex will be reinstated. This is an important victory for the LGBTQ+ community in Sherman. Many inhabitants express they are still anxious about the sway that traditionalist politics and faith have on educational facilities. Sherman High School attracted attention from around the country when the school leader dismissed Max Hightower, a transgender high school student, along with some other students, from the performance of “Oklahoma”. “

The head of the school supposedly informed parents that it would exclusively assign girls that were born female to female roles and boys that were born male to male roles. “

The district initially decided to reschedule the performance on account of its explicit material and profanity, however, shortly afterwards announced that a suitable version of “Oklahoma” would be accessible instead. The representation of Ali Hakim was not included in the adaptation, which had been created for Hightower to act in. On Monday, numerous citizens, comprising of parents, college students from the region, within addition to present and ex-Sherman High scholars, crowded the district’s office to express their discontentment.
