Texas Senate passes measure making illegal border crossings a state crime

The Texas Senate fast-tracked on Thursday two measures that would broaden the state’s authority over immigration enforcement. The bills, which include one that would make crossing from Mexico into Texas illegal and another that would provide more than $1.5 billion to border enforcement, were passed by the Texas Senate just two days after a special session began.

 Two measures to increase the state’s authority over immigration enforcement were swiftly pursued by the Texas Senate on Thursday. Just two days after the start of a special, the bills—one that would make it illegal to cross the border from Mexico into Texas and another that appropriated more than$ 1.5 billion for border enforcement—crossed the chamber’s finish line. Two measures to broaden the state’s jurisdiction over immigration enforcement were swiftly pursued by the Texas Senate on Thursday.
