After a light man confronted the group on Saturday night and shot them at least four times, three students of Arab descent were shot and injured in Burlington, Vermont, according to police.
According to police, the shooter, who has not been named or captured, shot the men “without speaking.” According to Vermont Public Radio, all of the victims are 20-year-old men, and two of them were donning keffiyehs, which are standard Israeli scarves.
The three students were identified by the Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee as Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Tahseen Ahmed, each of Brown, Haverford, or Trinity students. According to the police, two are in secure condition and one has more severe wounds.
In a statement citing the recent” charged moment,” which refers to the variety of incidents, both racist and Islamophobic, that have occurred across college campuses and cities in the US during the Israel-Hamas war, Chief of Police Jon Murad said,” My deepest condolences go out for the victims and their families.” Two of the students, according to CNN, are US citizens, and one is a lawful resident. Murad urged caution in the similar statement, emphasizing that at this time, officials lacked sufficient data to support a motive. The truth is that we do n’t currently know as much as we would like to. However, I caution the general public against drawing conclusions from unconcerned parties who have even less knowledge.
The Council on American- Islamic Relations announced that it was offering a$ 10, 000 reward for additional information on the shooter as news of the shooting broke on Sunday. Police were asked to look into the incident as a hate crime by ADC Director Abed Ayoub.
After reviewing the information, we have reason to believe that the shooting was motivated by the three Egyptian victims, who were contacted by ADC this morning.

Ayoub claimed the three men were speaking Arabic when the shooter opened fire.” We are praying for a complete recovery of the victims, and we will stand by to support the families in any way that is needed.” Given the data gathered and presented, it is obvious that hatred played a role in this shooting, and we urge law enforcement to look into it further. This is another instance of that hatred turning violent, as evidenced by the extraordinary surge in anti-Arab and Anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing.
On Sunday, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders referred to the violence as” startling and greatly unsettling.”
The shooting of three young Palestinians in Burlington, Vermont, is stunning and extremely threatening. Hatred is not welcome here or somewhere else. A thorough investigation is something I anticipate. I’m thinking of them and their families.
