Biden Administration Announces Dramatic Plan to Cut Methane Pollution

On Saturday, the Biden administration announced a new ambitious plan to drastically reduce methane emissions. Methane is the second largest cause of global warming behind carbon dioxide. It would require oil companies to detect and fix methane leaks for the first time. The announcement was made as the United Nations hosted its Cop28 climate summit

Methane emissions, the second-leading contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, will be significantly reduced under the idealistic innovative plan the Biden administration unveiled on Saturday. For the first time, methane leaks would need to be identified and fixed by oil and gas producers.
The announcement was made as Vice President Kamala Harris spoke briefly at the Cop28 climate summit held by the United Nations in Dubai. She stated,” We must have the ambition to meet this moment, to quicken our investments, and to lead with courage and conviction.”
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the fresh regulation would stop 58 million tons of methane emissions from 2024 to 2038, or roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide that American coal-fired power plants emit each year. Although conservative groups are likely to challenge the administrative rule in court, it does n’t require congressional approval and will go into effect the following year. ( The US Supreme Court has already set restrictions on the administration’s efforts to combat climate change. )
The policy was referred to as” the most impactful climate rule that the United States has ever adopted in terms of addressing temperatures we would otherwise see” by Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund.
The 50 largest oil producers in the world came to a new agreement to cut methane emissions by 80 to 90 percent by the end of the decade in individual announcements at the UN summit.
However, climate organizations have criticized Biden for not doing more to combat climate change by focusing on fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. This year, the administration approved novel drilling leases, and domestic oil production has increased significantly. In 2023, which is expected to be the hottest year on record, the United States is prepared to extract report amounts of oil and gas. Biden skipped the UN summit in order to concentrate on different matters, such as Israel’s military operation in Gaza.
The United Arab Emirates, one of the world’s largest oil producers, has been criticized by environmentalists for hosting the summit there. The head of the state-owned oil company serves as the summit’s president. Methane emissions, the second-leading contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, will be significantly reduced under the ambitious innovative plan the Biden administration unveiled on Saturday. Recently, the Biden government declared a vigorous new policy on Saturday to drastically lower methane emissions, which are the second main source of climate change after carbon dioxide. Oil and gas companies will be obliged to identify and remedy any releases of methane, according to the announcement made when Vice President Kamala Harris said a few words at the Cop28 climate gathering in Dubai. She emphasized the importance of having the ambition to keep up with the current moment, increase investments, and act with conviction. The EPA predicted that the new regulation would prevent 58 million tons of methane emissions from 2024 to 2038, which is the equivalent to the yearly output of all the coal-burning power plants in the United States. The administrative regulation does not need to go through the legislature and will become applicable in the upcoming year; nonetheless, conservative groups are anticipated to take legal action against it. The US Supreme Court has already restricted the administration’s attempts to combat climate change.
