Henry Kissinger Enabled the Occupation of Western Sahara

Henry Kissinger is not usually thought of in a positive light, partly due to his involvement in enabling Morocco to invade and sustain their rule of Western Sahara. The area which used to belong to Spain is still mainly controlled by an oppressive Moroccan rule until present. The United States has supported Morocco’s control of the area through providing military assistance and protecting it from criticism by the United Nations Security Council. This is similar to the way it has supported Israel’s rule. In contrast to the Israeli administration of the West Bank, which the Biden government expressed an inclination toward a two-state solution, the US and Israel are the only countries that declare formal acknowledgement of Morocco’s theft of the territory. This position contradicts several United Nations Security Council resolutions and a historic ruling from the World Court which demanded the right to self-determination. Western Sahara is an area that is UN-populated and is the size of Colorado. It is situated near the Atlantic coast in the northern part of Africa, immediately south of Morocco. For centuries, nomadic Arab tribes, called the Sahrawis, have resided in the region and are renowned for their long struggle against external control. In the late 1800s, Spain took over the territory and failed to relinquish it until the mid-1950s, much later than most African countries had become independent from European rule. In 1973, the Polisario Front, a nationalist group, began a war in order to become independent from Spain. Ultimately, Spain committed to having a poll in 1975 to decide the destiny of the Spanish Sahara.
