In a statement released on Friday, Jim Pillen re-emphasized his position on why the state won’t be partaking in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children or Summer EBT program. Pillen stated that now that the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, tax payers in Nebraska anticipate the cessation of government benefits extended during the crisis. The specific program, initiated during the peak of the pandemic in 13 different places, issued EBT cards to underprivileged families with children eligible for free or discounted school lunches. These families were provided with a monthly sum of $40 per child throughout the summer. The state would need to cover $300,000 in administrative fees in return for the $18 million in federal funds. Pillen had previously expressed his opposition to welfare at a press conference, explaining his decision to refuse the funds. Pillen stated that the state intends to keep supporting children via the Summer Food Service Program, a system that supplies meals to underprivileged children enlisted in onsite services such as summer school and camps. Protesters at a gathering held on Friday outside the Governor’s Residence agitated for the federal program, arguing that the Summer Food Service Program fails to cater to several children who can’t partake in these on-site programs, according to a report by the Nebraska Examiner. The Governor of Iowa also shared his thoughts on the matter. Kim Reynolds likewise proclaimed that her state would not participate in the federal program. Reynolds refused the $18 million due to the “child obesity” issue. She stated in a press release that an EBT card doesn’t encourage healthy eating habits when child obesity is currently a major problem. As per The Associated Press, 28 states, six U.S. territories, and Native American tribes will participate in the program.
