In the year 2020, William Green, aged 43, was tragically slain whilst in handcuffs, whilst confined to a police car in Prince George’s County, Maryland. A jury found Michael Owen, an officer, to be not guilty of homicide and a variety of other allegations. This verdict was in support of the Green family. The relatives of William Green, a thirty-year-old African American man whose life was ended after a police officer shot him in January of 2020, are demanding that the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division look into his passing following the police officer’s acquittal of second-degree homicide, misconduct in office and assault charges just recently. Detective Michael Owen, formerly of the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland, allegedly encountered Green sleeping inside his car intoxicated from an unknown narcotic, per a police report. Green was secured in handcuffs by Owen and put in the seat next to the driver of the police car. Owen and Green had a clash that ended with Owen shooting Green six times. The prosecution and the defense both accepted that Owen fired at Green while he was restrained, however they argued over whether Owen had done it in self-defense. Owen’s lawyers asserted that even while restrained, Green had tried to grab Owen’s gun. There was no body camera footage of the incident since the local police department had not yet supplied all their officers with them. Green was dismissed from his role in the department after the occurrence of the shooting, and his family eventually settled with the police division for an amount of $20 million in September 2020.
