Special Counsel Asks Supreme Court To Rule Quickly Whether Trump Can Be Prosecuted

A federal judge ruled that the case could proceed, but Trump indicated he would ask Washington’s federal appeals court to reverse this decision.

Smith filed a request at the Supreme Court on Monday with the aim to proceed to trial quickly; the hearing is planned for March 4. The major issue they are debating is the ethics of prosecuting a former President who has been impeached but not convicted. The Supreme Court will begin considering the appeal no earlier than January 4. The prosecutors urged the court to make a definitive ruling on the respondent’s claims of immunity as soon as possible to speed up the process, stressing the importance of the public awaiting the result. A question has been raised concerning a decision made by a federal judge in Montana on December 28th. A U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan denied arguments presented by President Trump’s lawyers, which contended that he was immunized from facing federal prosecution. Chutkan, appointed by Obama, stated in her decree that the position of president cannot provide anybody with an everlasting “immunity from prosecution.”
