A United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed by the United States on Friday, supported by almost all another Security Council members.
In the 13 to 1 vote, the U.S. was the hapless veto, and Britain abstained.
A ceasefire, according to U.S. deputy ambassador Robert Wood, “would just leave Hamas in place, able to regroup and repeat what it did on October 7″ and is” not only impossible but harmful.” Israel has the legal right to defend itself against terrorism in accordance with international law in response to the 1,200-person Hamas attack.
More than 17, 000 Palestinians have died and millions have been displaced as a result of the war in Gaza, which is now in its second month. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is getting worse, according to warnings from the UN and additional aid organizations, as people are having trouble getting basic necessities like food and medicine. The US is demonstrating that international humanitarian law can be applied selectively and that some people’s lives are less important than others by continuing to provide consular cover for the continued atrocities in Gaza, according to Executive Director Avril Benoit of Doctors Without Borders USA.
Following the veto, foreign ministers from various Muslim nations met with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and “expressed serious dissatisfaction with the Security Council’s inability to carry out its responsibilities,” according to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry. According to the New York Times, Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, described the veto as” a mark of shame that will follow the United States for several years.”
Gilad Erdan, the Jewish ambassador, expressed gratitude to the US for its assistance on social media and stated that just the release of all hostages and the destruction of Hamas would allow for a ceasefire.
The United States continues to support Israel’s war efforts, despite British officials ‘ calls for Israel to take more action to reduce human deaths and displacement. The sale of almost 14, 000 rounds of tank ammunition to Israel was approved by the Department of Defense on Saturday, avoiding the customary parliamentary review for arms sales to other nations. Anthony Blinken, the secretary of state, declared that” an emergency exists that necessitates the quick sale to the Government of Israel.” A United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed by the United States on Friday, supported by almost all another Security Council members. Subscribe to the free Mother Jones Daily newsletter and track news that matters; the United States was the only country in the United Nations Security Council that voted against the resolution that asked for a ceasefire in Gaza on Friday. Britain abstained from voting. Robert Wood, the U.S. deputy ambassador, said that a truce was not only improbable, but also hazardous since it would permit Hamas to reorganize and perform what it did on October 7. Israel is justified in responding to the offensive perpetrated by Hamas, in which 1,200 people lost their lives, by defending itself from terrorism based on international regulations. The battle in Gaza, which has continued for three months, has taken the lives of over seventeen thousand Palestinians and caused the forced relocation of millions. Organizations affiliated with the United Nations and other charitable organizations have expressed their concern over the increased hardship in Gaza, with people being unable to access essential resources such as food and medical supplies. Avril Benoit, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders USA, suggested that by continually providing diplomatic protection for the ongoing violence in Gaza, the US was conveying a message that the treatment of certain individuals can be chosen — and that the lives of certain individuals are viewed as less significant than the lives of others. Afterwards, various Arab foreign ministers visited with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and stated their unhappiness with the Security Council’s ineptness to fulfill its commitments in a formal statement by the Saudi foreign ministry. Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, described the veto as “a blemish that will accompany the United States for many years,” reported the New York Times. In response, Israeli ambassador Gilad Erdan took to social media to show his appreciation of the United States for their support, saying, “An armistice will only be possible with the liberation of all the hostages and the dismantling of Hamas.” U.S. government officials have called for Israel to treat civilians more carefully and avoid displacing them, however, they are still backing Israel’s military activity.
