The family of Ashli Babbitt, the rioter who was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer on January 6 during the attack on the U.S. Capitol, is suing the federal government for unlawful death. The lawsuit seeks$ 30 million in damages and was filed on the three-year anniversary of Trump supporters storming the Capitol in an effort to prevent Joe Biden’s election from being confirmed.
Lt. Michael Byrd, a member of the security detail guarding fugitive members of Congress, was the Capitol Police officer who shot Babbitt, according to reports. Babbitt was reportedly shot when she climbed up into the broken window frame of a door that was being beaten by rioters, according to reports. The Washington Post reported that Byrd’s actions may have prevented Congressmen from dying.
According to Mark E. Schamel,” He put an end to the last wave of rioters who were just steps away from Congressmen.” ” If these rioters had been able to reach their intended targets, sitting members of Congress,” it is not difficult to imagine the impact on our democracy.
Byrd’s actions have recently received praise from the Capitol Police, and an internal investigation revealed no wrongdoing on his part. Although that is what the innovative lawsuit claims, a subsequent investigation by federal prosecutors determined that Babbitt’s civil rights were never violated in the shooting. Attorneys for the right-wing watchdog organization Judicial Watch are defending Babbitt’s estate and her family. Ashli Babbitt’s family is suing the federal government for unlawful death after she was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer on January 6 during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The relatives of Ashli Babbitt, who participated in the January 6 riot and lost her life after being shot by a Capitol Police Officer during the assault on the U.S. Capitol, are filing a lawsuit against the federal government claiming wrongful death. The legal action was initiated on the day marking three years since Trump supporters stormed the Capitol with the intention of halting the validation of Joe Biden’s election victory, and it seeks $30 million for damages. Capitol Police Officer Lt. Michael Byrd, assigned to safeguard members of Congress, fatally shot Babbitt during their retreat. Reports suggest that Babbitt was shot as she elevated herself into the shattered frame of a door which was under attack by rioters. Byrd’s attorney informed the Washington Post that Byrd’s involvement could have prevented potential harm to congressional members. “He halted the final wave of protestors who were dangerously close to congress members,” stated Schamel. One can easily envision the effect on our democratic system if these protestors had succeeded in confronting their intended victims: currently serving congressional members. Previously, the Capitol Police lauded Byrd for his behavior, and an internal investigation cleared him of any misconduct. A more thorough probe by federal prosecutors established that Babbitt’s civil rights weren’t infringed upon during the shooting, despite contrary claims made in the recent lawsuit.
