Democracy’s high stakes in Taiwan’s vote  

As the world watches Taiwan’s elections unfold this week, it is a reminder that authoritarian governments are constantly working to make the planet less safe for democracy. Beijing’s maneuvering on Taiwan today may very well be a precursor to the challenges that the U.S. faces tomorrow.

 We are reminded that authoritarian regimes are constantly working to make the world less healthy for democracy as we watch Taiwan’s election this week. The difficulties the United States will face tomorrow may be foreshadowed by Beijing’s actions in Taiwan today. We are reminded that authoritarian regimes are constantly working to make the world less healthy for democracy as we watch Taiwan’s election this week. Beijing’s actions in Taiwan today may serve as a warm-up for the difficulties the United States will encounter tomorrow.
