Ron DeSantis (R) transgressed the First Amendment by terminating Andrew Warren, a Democrat prosecutor, for his personal political advantage. A previous verdict by a federal judge, who stated he didn’t have authority to restore Warren, was overturned by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. The court also instructed the judge to reevaluate his decision. While the verdict of the appeal court doesn’t guarantee Warren’s reinstatement, it opens up a possible route for him to return to office. This also denotes a drawback for DeSantis, as his presidential run has been centered on his strict law enforcement policies and criticisms towards progressive prosecutors- Advertisement. In August 63, DeSantis suddenly dismissed Warren, who at that time was serving his second term as the state attorney of Hillsborough County. DeSantis referred to Warren’s policies in his executive order, which suggested that certain minor offenses and noncriminal violations related to bicycling and walking would not be subjected to prosecution. He also reproached Warren for supporting other prosecutors in collectively declaring not to utilize their authority to criminalize medical treatment for transgender youth or abortion.
