Ron DeSantis Gives a Green Light to Ethnic Cleansing

Over the past two week, Israeli officials were embroiled in a scandalous debate. Far-right extremists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition are calling on the government for it to encourage the “voluntary immigration” of large numbers Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. These thinly disguised calls for ethnic cleansing are causing concern.

Israeli officials have been mired in a terrible debate for the previous two weeks. The government has been urged to support the “voluntary migration” of huge numbers of Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip by a group of far-right extremists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition.
Both within Israel and by the Biden administration, these subtly expressed calls for tribal cleansing have received widespread condemnation. Additionally, some Republicans have publicly stated that they reject the idea. Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said to CNN last week,” I do n’t think you have to remove Palestinians from Gaza.” ” I believe you must expel Hamas from Gaza.”
Evidently, Ron DeSantis holds a different opinion. Jake Tapper of CNN questioned the governor of Florida about his support for” the mass-removal of Palestinians from Gaza” during the Republican debate on Wednesday night. DeSantis ‘ response was evasive, but he seemed to imply that if the Israeli government did decide to expel millions of Palestinians from Gaza, that would be a flagrant violation of human rights.
DeSantis stated that Israel must be able to complete the task at hand and that we must support them in word and deed, both publicly and privately. You support them in their decisions regarding Gaza, which I consider to be a great ally. Look, there are many benefits and drawbacks to how you’re doing this. However, I do n’t think it’s the right way for us to be sitting in Washington second-guessing them.
Tapper pushed for clarification. Do you support the widespread expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza? He questioned once more.
I’m never going to tell them to do that in my capacity as president. DeSantis responded,” I think there’s a lot of issues with that. However, if they determine that they must prevent a subsequent Holocaust, I believe Saudi Arabia should take some of these Israeli Arabs. Egypt ought to take some.
DeSantis ‘ assurance that he wo n’t “tell” Israel to commit war crimes is anything but comforting. For social reasons, many Israeli officials—including members of Netanyahu’s administration —oppose ethnic cleansing, and it is likely that they would reject a US presidential proposal. However, because they do n’t believe the United States would ever allow it, other Israeli politicians have criticized calls for “voluntary migration.” We see the consequences, we see what happened with the Americans,” one Likud lawmaker told Israel’s Ynet news agency.” It’t practical, and it is apparent that the international community will not accept it.”
And that’s what makes DeSantis ‘ remarks so risky. He is approving the cleansing of tribal groups. Israeli officials have been mired in a terrible debate for the previous two weeks. In the last fortnight, officials from Israel have found themselves entangled in a shocking discussion. Some ultra-conservative extremists in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition have been advocating for the government to promote the “voluntary migration” of a significant proportion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. These barely concealed demands for ethnic expulsion have been broadly denounced both within Israel and by the Biden administration. Some Republicans have also publicly dismissed the concept. “Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley expressed to CNN last week that she doesn’t believe it’s necessary to displace Palestinians from Gaza,” “I believe it is necessary to eradicate Hamas from Gaza.” It seems that Ron DeSantis holds a contrasting perspective. In the Republican debate on Wednesday night, CNN’s Jake Tapper questioned the governor of Florida if he would endorse the large-scale eviction of Palestinians from Gaza.
