Three Migrants Drowned After Texas’ Attempt to Seize Control of the Border

Three migrants drowned on Friday near the Texas border, a tragedy that federal officials believe could have been avoided if the state had not taken control of border patrols to pursue its anti-immigration objectives. CNN reported on Monday that Mexico’s National Institute of Migration identified the migrants.

On Friday night, three migrants drowned in the Rio Grande close to the Texas border. According to federal officials, this tragedy might have been avoided if it were n’t for the state’s attempt to seize control of patrolling the border in order to further its anti-immigration objectives.
According to CNN, Victerma de la Sancha Cerros, 33, Yorlei Rubi, 10, and Jonathan Agustn Briones, 8, were the migrants, according to the National Institute of Migration of Mexico, which released the information on Monday. Henry Cuellar, a Democratic representative from Texas, claimed that the group was made up of” Mexican sources.”
The tragedy is the most recent development in a dispute between Texas and national officials over how to control immigration into the state.
Texas GOP Governor next month Illegal immigration into Texas was declared a state crime by Greg Abbott, making it possible for state law enforcement to detain them somewhere in the state. The DOJ responded by suing Texas, claiming that the law broke the Constitution’s “assignment of the national government to regulate immigration and manage our foreign borders.” The Texas National Guard had denied Border Patrol access to a 2.5-mile section of the border, including Shelby Park, where the migrants drowned, the DOJ claimed next week.
These incidents are a part of Gov., so they do n’t just happen. The only thing Texas officials were n’t doing to stop immigrants from entering the state is” shooting people …because, of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder,” according to Abbott’s long history of anti-immigration sentiment, which, as I reported Friday, included telling a right-wing radio host.
Texas officials allegedly “did never grant access to Border Patrol agents to save the migrants,” according to Rep. Cuellar’s initial statement on Saturday, which sparked nationwide headlines and prevented the state from saving migrants who were constantly drowning. However, that claim is disproved by a recent DOJ filing with the Supreme Court.
According to the report, Border Patrol was n’t made aware of the migrants ‘ drownings until an hour had passed. The three migrants drowned in the area about an hour before, according to the DOJ, who informed Border Patrol around 9 p.m. local time on Friday.
According to the filing, Border Patrol was even informed that two additional migrants were “in distress on the U.S. side of the river” at the time. The DOJ filing claims that when a Border Patrol agent went to the park’s entrance to tell the Texas National Guard about the murdered migrants, the state agents refused to let them in, “even in emergency situations.” Texas officials “physically barred” Border Patrol agents from entering the area, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. Officials from Mexico told Border Patrol that the two migrants who were “in distress” were afterward saved by an airboat operated by the Mexican government while they were suffering from hypothermia. They also added that “officials had likewise rescued two more immigrants who had attempted to cross that night.”
It is difficult to predict what might have happened if Border Patrol had previously had access to the area, but at the very least, it would have had the chance to carry out its duties and support its counterparts in the Mexican government in carrying out the rescue mission. That was made difficult by Texas.
The DOJ added that the events on Friday show how” Texas gets in the way of Border Patrol patrolling the border, finding and rescuing any stranded migrants, and also getting access to any wire it may need to cut or move to fulfill its obligations.”
Officials “are saddened by horrible migrant drownings in Eagle Pass” and “remain gravely concerned by actions that prevent the U. S. Border Patrol from performing their essential missions of arresting people who enter the United States illegally and providing humanitarian response to individuals in need,” according to a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection.
According to the Texas Tribune, the Biden administration sent a cease-and-desist letter to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over the weekend, claiming that the state’s actions were illegal, “impeded operations of Border Patrol,” and are in” conflict with the authority and duties of border Patrol under federal law.” The state has until Wednesday to stop obstructing Border Patrol’s access to the border, according to a Feds deadline.
Tuesday, a request for comment from representatives for Paxton’s office was not answered.
” The Texas governor’s policies are cruel, dangerous, and inhumane,” a DHS spokesperson told Mother Jones, adding that” Texas ‘ blatant disregard for federal authority over immigration poses grave risks.” Federal officials claim that if not for the state’s attempt to seize control of patrolling the border in pursuit of its anti-immigration objectives, the tragedy of three migrants drowning in the Rio Grande near the Texas border on Friday night might have been avoided. The National Institute of Migration in Mexico identified the, according to CNN, on Monday.
