Greg Abbott encouraging states to send troops along the southern border in an effort to curb illegal immigration. In his Truth Social tirade, Trump also vowed to “work hand in hand with Governor Abbott” to carry out what he referred to as” the Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History” if re-elected. ( Representatives from Abbott’s office and the Texas Military Department have n’t yet responded to my questions about whether they support the Trump campaign on the issue or if they agree with his call for states to send guards to the border. )
Trump wrote,” Those who Biden has let in should n’t get comfortable because they’re going home.”
As I previously reported this month, Abbott signed a law that would make it illegal for state law enforcement to detain undocumented immigrants somewhere in Texas. The Department of Justice responded by claiming that the law is unconstitutional in a federal district court lawsuit.
Three migrants—a woman and two children—drank it earlier this month, and the DOJ claimed that the Texas National Guard had denied Border Patrol access to a 2.5-mile section of the border in an additional court case before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled this week that national agents could destroy razor wire Texas installed along that section of the border in Border Patrol’s attempt to gain access.
Trump and Texas seem to share one thing in common. Yet when the rule of law is passed down from the highest court in the land, neither party considers themselves to be under it. The day after the Supreme Court’s ruling, on Tuesday, the Texas Military Department issued a stubborn statement stating that it” continues to hold the line…to deter and prevent immoral entry.” According to CBS News, the Biden administration gave Texas until today’s end of the day to give Border Patrol complete access to that region. Requests for comment were also not promptly answered by representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, Customs, and Border Protection.
The governor recently told a right-wing radio host that the only reason Texas officials were n’t shooting immigrants crossing the border was “because, of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder,” making Trump’s alliance with Abbott especially contentious. My inquiries about whether they agree with Abbott’s remarks about shooting migrants and whether Trump would accuse Texas officials of murder if re-elected were not promptly answered by the Trump campaign.
But as my colleague Dan Friedman explained, we now know that Trump is planning an anti-immigration “blitz” if re-elected, a constitutionally dubious strategy that would reportedly seek to end birthright citizenship, ban many Muslims, and detain illegal immigrants in “vast holding facilities” until deportation.
