The chief counsel in the attorney general’s office, Katherine Robertson, stated that Marshall has no plans to use this court decision to prosecute IVF families or providers. Three IVF clinics in the state have temporarily stopped offering services because they are concerned about facing potential criminal charges related to their handling of embryos. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) urged state legislators to provide further explanation on the ruling and specifically safeguard IVF procedures. “In response to the decision made by the Alabama Supreme Court, I emphasized that our state is dedicated to promoting a culture that values life,” Ivey stated on Friday. This includes couples who are hoping to become parents and are utilizing IVF, and I am excited to continue monitoring this issue closely. Alabama’s attorney general has strongly supported some of the toughest anti-abortion laws in the nation within the state of Alabama. Last year, Marshall promised to pursue legal action against individuals who consume abortion pills and those who assist in arranging travel for abortions outside of their state. Alabama Chief Justice Tom Parker cited the Bible in his recent opinion to support his ruling. He stated that taking a human life is seen as a serious offense to God, as all humans bear the image of God from the moment of conception.
