However, CPAC head Matt Schlapp made the decision this year that the group would not longer grant press credentials to “left-wing media.”
In a segment for the right-wing cable outlet Real America’s Voice, he said,” So CPAC has new rules,” to former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. ” If you’re a propagandist, you have the same access to tickets as everyone more.” However, you are not a member of the media, and we will never give you credence by claiming to be one. Schlapp received praise from Bannon for his epic troll. Bannon exclaimed with joy,” People’s heads are blowing away.”
Of course, CPAC continues to be covered by the progressive media. Veterans of Barry Goldwater’s unsuccessful 1964 presidential campaign organized it in 1974, making it the oldest and largest liberal gathering in the nation. It takes place today in a convention center outside of Washington, DC, and runs from Wednesday through Saturday, when Trump is anticipated to show up. For those who did not want to pay the admission fee, it was simpler because everything was live-streamed.
I believed Schlapp when he said I would buy a ticket. A male Senate campaign worker who claims Schlapp groped him in the car while he was working for Herschel Walker in Georgia is suing a conservative organization for$ 295, and I was n’t thrilled to be giving that money. However, contrary to what Steve Bannon and the CPAC boss appeared to believe, the general admission pass was certainly the democratic one.
For instance, people have been great even without my official press badge! In the bathroom line, no one has hissed “fake news” at me. Conference attendees have chatted me up unprovoked rather than turning their backs and marching away when I approach. It felt a little uneasy, so I frequently admitted that I was working for the media. However, there were times when they had already spoken out in a way that was raw and ridiculous.
I had been banished from the press pen and was now merely a member of the audience, which was originally off-limits to journalists. To put it mildly, it was enlightening. For instance, on Friday, I listened to a Republican candidate for governor of West Virginia, Chris Miller, give his main-stage speech. He was listed on the program just as “businessman” because CPAC forbids speakers from explicitly campaigning that due to its tax-exempt status.
Miller spent some of his allotted five minutes criticizing transgender healthcare, just like almost every different speaker at the event. He claimed that” Woke doctors actually turn boys into girls.” They are engaged in mutilation, never medicine. They ought to be in jail. At that point, a large man seated next to me who was wearing an enormous black cowboy hat leaned over and said,” I think we should hang them all!” I genuinely do. He then laughed as if we were all laughing at the same time. I’ll admit that I held back from telling him I was working for the left-wing false news.

Afterwards, I was seated next to a woman wearing full MAGA gear during Governor Kristi Noem of North Dakota’s speech. My neighbor gave me a little heart attack when Noem said,” Some people love America, and some people hate America.” ” Get the FUCK OUT!” She yelled angrily and prepared to rumble. ” Get the FUCK OUT!” The elderly man next to her, wearing a Trump camouflage hat, had apparently dozed off.
The right-wing cable network Real America’s Voice had set up a studio in the hotel lobby outside the CPAC key stage. The majority of the conference was spent byannon holding court there and speaking with a number of MAGA luminaries, including Rep. Byron Donalds ( R- FL ), the lone Black conservative in the mix, and Kash Patel, whom President Donald Trump had previously appointed to lead counterterrorism at the National Security Administration. The audience at the studio was frequently larger than some of the speakers on the major stage. In terms of volume, it undoubtedly surpassed the convention.
A middle-aged man in a black suit approached me as I was taking in the spectacle and pointed to stoutly positioned 7-foot-tall poster of Tucker Carlson’s face outside. Do you understand why that is around? He enquired. I clarified that it was an advertisement for Chadwick Moore, a queer journalist and former progressive, in his book Tucker: The Biography. Oh, I see,” he retorted. It was strange given that my press badge had previously stated everything, but the man obviously wanted to continue talking and asked me why I was ok.
My inquisitor was disappointed to learn that there was no response to the question when he arrived at CPAC to hear what people had to say about school selection. He bemoaned the absence of education policy at this occasion. In fact, the majority of the policy discussions that took place at CPAC this year focused on mass deportations and assaults on trans athletes. Before CPAC became a division of Trump Inc., which was focused on all the MAGA grievances like racial equity, the evils of windmills, or bans on gas stoves—the calm panels about the national debt, balancing the budget, and Social Security reform that again demanded top billing. I was amazed at how strange it was to be on the other side after attending CPAC for two days. I’ve been a credentialed reporter at numerous right-wing conferences and events over the past 15 years, including those held in the Trump White House. This time, I was quickly accepted as a member of the tribe rather than being treated as an enemy, and it became apparent how alluring this could be for some people. I witnessed firsthand how people felt free to be their worst deplorable selves in what they saw as a secure environment, surrounded by encouraging, like-minded enablers.
I did, however, miss the media joke. CPAC claimed in tax filings in 2019 that it had credentialed more than 2,000 journalists, making the reunion of the reporters when little as a social gathering. Schlapp boasted about allowing all the journalists to attend the conference when I spoke with him about it two years back because it demonstrated that CPAC was” the center of social gravity.” He spoke out about the dangers of noisy democracy and the significance of growing his show’s fan base. Everything appears to have changed. I was n’t shocked, though, when my request to cover CPAC was turned down. Despite all of its stated concern for free speech, the MAGA world has never been pleasant to the mainstream media. I’ve been denied press credentials or expelled from MAGA events in recent years, most just from every Trump event in Iowa held in January during the caucuses. CPAC had frequently appeared to be the final outlier.
Schlapp wo n’t likely receive better news coverage if liberal reporters are not allowed in the pressroom. It wo n’t stop those journalists from probing him about his leadership of the American Conservative Union, the organization that organized the conference, or the other men who have since made more sexual assault accusations against him.
