According to ABC News, House Speaker Mike Johnson ( R- LA ) said that Alejandro Mayorkas deserves to be impeached and that Congress has a legal duty to do so.
Impeachment is probably the most significant authority granted to the House after a declaration of war, and we have handled this matter accordingly, he continued.

The House of Representatives has only impeached Alejandro Mayorkas. His open-border policies have actually caused death and destruction in our nation. The Senate today has a responsibility to take this up and remove this man from office. Rep. Lauren Boebert ( R- CO ) said,” He has NO place in our government.

According to ABC News:
Mayorkas will then stand trial in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where he will likely be found guilty and removed from office with a two-thirds majority vote. Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the chamber, referred to the impeachment as a” sham” on Tuesday night.
According to the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, he has been charged with “willful and widespread refusal to comply with the law” and “breach of common trust” in the midst of an increase in unauthorized migrant crossings.
In a memo distributed due to Tuesday’s vote, DHS responded,” This administration has removed, returned, or expelled more migrants in three years than the preceding Administration did in four years.”
After the impeachment vote, a department spokesperson retorted on Tuesday night that” House Republicans have erroneously smeared an devoted public servant who has spent more than 20 years enforcing our laws and serving our country,”” with no shred of evidence or reasonable Democratic grounds, and despite bipartisan opposition.”
The spokesperson stated that the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Mayorkas would keep up their daily efforts to protect Americans.

Associated Press report:
The House removed Mayorkas 214–213 in a traditional rebuke. Republicans recovered despite opposition within their personal ranks thanks to the return of Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who had left Washington for cancer treatment, and a Northeastern storm that had an impact on some others.
After the vote, President Joe Biden declared in a statement that history will not be kind to House Republicans for their flagrant act of illegal partisanship that targeted an heroic open servant in order to engage in trivial political games.
As Republicans struggle to uphold their priorities, the GOP’s attempt to impeach Mayorkas over how he handled the southern border has taken on a social air of desperation.
The Homeland Security Committee brought two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, alleging that he “willfully and consistently” refused to uphold current immigration laws and violated the public’s trust by deceiving Congress and declaring the border secure.
The charges against Mayorkas, according to opponents of the impeachment effort, amount to a policy disagreement over Biden’s border policy and almost rise to the bar of high crimes and misdemeanors under the Constitution.”}]] [[{“value”:”

ABC News:
Mayorkas will now face a trial in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where a two-thirds majority vote will be needed to convict and remove him from office, which is very unlikely to happen. Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the chamber, called Tuesday night’s impeachment “a sham.”
According to articles of impeachment, Republicans accused Mayorkas “of a willful and systematic refusal to comply with law” and a “breach in public trust” despite unauthorized migration crossings on the rise.
In a memo distributed ahead of the vote on Tuesday, DHS stated that “this administration has removed, re-returned, or expelled” more migrants in just three years than it did in four.
A spokesperson for the department responded on Tuesday night after the impeachment votes, saying that “without any evidence or legitimate Constitutional ground, and despite bipartisan resistance, House Republicans have falsely defamed a dedicated public service who has spent over 20 years enforcing laws and serving our nation.”
The spokesperson said that Secretary Mayorkas, along with the Department of Homeland Security, will continue to work every day to ensure the safety of Americans.

The Associated Press:
In a historic rebuke the House impeached Mayorkas with 214-213. The Republicans recovered despite the dissent within their ranks, with the return of Majority leader Steve Scalise who bolstered the GOP’s numbers. He had been away from Washington to receive cancer treatment and a Northeastern Storm that affected some others.
In a statement issued after the vote, President Joe Biden said: “History won’t look kindly on House Republicans because of their blatant unconstitutional partisanship which has targeted an honourable public servant to play petty politics.”
The GOP’s effort to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the Southern Border has taken on a political desperation, as Republicans struggle to meet their priorities.
Mayorkas was facing two articles of impeachment from the Homeland Security Committee, arguing that he “willfully” and “systematically” refused enforcement of existing immigration laws. He also breached public trust by lying and telling Congress that the border was secure.
Critics of the impeachment attempt said that the charges against Mayorkas amounted to a dispute over Biden’s policy on the border, and did not meet the Constitution’s bar for high crimes and misdemeanors.
