Students Walk Out Of Oklahoma High School To Protest Nex Benedict’s Death

Dozens of Owasso High students said they believed the school had not responded adequately to the death of the 16-year old and that a bullying culture persists.

Many students at Owasso High School in Oklahoma participated in a walkout on Monday following the passing of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student who passed away on February 1st. On the eighth day following a physical altercation in a school bathroom. The students stated that they were demonstrating against a culture of bullying and the lack of action taken by school authorities. Last week, police shared a video of an interview with Benedict, in which he explains how three girls attacked them after they threw water at them. When questioned by the officer, Nex attributed the bullying they were experiencing to their fashion choices. During a vigil held for the sophomore over the weekend, Benedict’s friends informed NBC News’ Jo Yurcaba that Benedict identified as transgender. According to LGBTQ+ and other students at the school walkout on Monday, Benedict alternated between he/him pronouns and they/them pronouns at school. They also expressed feeling that the school fails to appropriately address bullying incidents. Despite students reporting bullying, they feel that the situation remains unchanged. Students have expressed concerns about ongoing bullying problems.
