[[{“value”:”This year, the average cost of a Super Bowl ticket is close to$ 9,000, making it the most expensive game ever. It is expected that billionaires will have trouble finding parking for their aircraft.
However, many employees at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas little make above the minimum wage. One such worker, Chayasura Walker, who earns$ 14.25 per hour without benefits while pouring$ 18 beers, is described in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Walker, who recently left his job at the Las Vegas Raiders ‘ home stadium in Paradise, Nevada, just west of the Vegas Strip, told the Chronicle in an interview this week that” I work three jobs and I still qualify for Medicaid.” That ought to reveal something to you.
Walker’s situation is hardly unusual. On Sunday, about 2,300 workers, including stadium janitors, ushers, cashiers hired by companies contracted to manage the new stadium, as well as a few dozen separate restaurants, will be serving hot dogs, mixing cocktails, and cleaning the restrooms.
Some part-time, seasonal jobs pay as little as$ 13 per hour, leaving many in need of other employment to support themselves.
A record-breaking$ 750 million in taxpayer money was approved by Nevada lawmakers in 2016 to aid in the construction of the new arena and the Raiders ‘ relocation from Oakland. The stadium, according to advocates, would create 14,000 permanent jobs and pay$ 39,000 annually.
Even though Allegiant is currently the fourth-highest-grossing stadium in the world and the Raiders are second in terms of NFL ticket sales ( the 49ers are first ), the stadium’s employment projections have fallen short. According to the Chronicle, whereas the Oakland Coliseum had an all-union workforce, 1, 500 of Allegiant’s 2, 200 employees are nonunion and working part-time and low-wage jobs.
The cooking union held a press conference last week, and many of those workers are now preparing to join. Vickey Powell, one of the employees, explained that she has worked as a cashier at the stadium for the food and beverage company Levy for four years, earning just$ 13 per hour. Powell remarked,” I am aware of how difficult it is to work multiple jobs only to support oneself and your family.”
She explained, sobbing, that she continued to go to work after her son passed away in 2021. ” I dedicated myself to the Raiders stadium and Levy to come in and be that worker that they asked me to be when I should have been at home grieving and setting up my son’s funeral.” And all I’m asking is for your assistance in getting us the compensation and justice we merit for everything we do.
D. Taylor, the president of Unite These, which oversees the cooking union, noted in a letter to Raiders president Sandra Douglass Morgan that unionized Allegiant employees are able to qualify by tying the annual hours they work there to those they worked at other union jobs. They are therefore eligible for benefits like health insurance, pensions, job security, and more.”}]] This year, the average cost of a Super Bowl ticket is close to$ 9,000, making it the most expensive game ever. The average cost of a Super Bowl ticket for this year is close to $9,000, making it potentially the priciest in history. In a San Francisco Chronicle article, the story is shared of an employee named Chayasura Walker who earns $14.25 per hour with no benefits while serving $18 beers. Walker told the Chronicle in an interview this week that despite working three jobs, he still meets the eligibility requirements for Medicaid. This statement was made after he finished his shift at the Las Vegas Raiders home stadium in Paradise, Nev. located slightly to the southwest of the Las Vegas Strip. “That should give you a hint.” La situation de Walker n’est pas inhabituelle.
