” We had a pretty in-depth discussion about whether or not this product would always become law.” According to NBC News, McConnell told reporters,” And the speaker has made it pretty clear to us that it wo n’t become law.”
Sen. Lankford has done a remarkable job of negotiating with the additional side and winning the support of the Border Council, but I want to congratulate him on that. But it appears that we have no real chance of passing a law here, he continued,” to me and to the majority of our members.”
NBC News has more:
Republican senators started opposing the bill minutes after it was released on Sunday. By Tuesday, there was a frenzied level of opposition, including from McConnell’s leadership team. When the bill is introduced to the floor on Wednesday, it is obvious that they will not receive the 60 votes required to override a filibuster. As a result, aid to Israel and Ukraine will even be halted for the time being.
Sen. Minority Whip John Thune, R-S. D., said in reference to Wednesday’s scheduled legal vote to start considering the bill,” I would expect that the motion to proceed to it will fail.”
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., the leading Democrat negotiator, responded,” No,” when asked if there was any hope left for the bill.
He expressed his outrage at the Republicans ‘ 180-degree vote on the bill.
McConnell has been urged to resign from his position as leader.

From the Daily Mail:
The republican border agreement that is dividing congressional Republicans has already sparked angry calls to dismantle the Senate leadership and Donald Trump’s vehement assertions that it is the party of “death wish” in 2024.
Hours after negotiators released details of their new bipartisan agreement, which gives the administration new power to” close” the border when crossings spike while sending billions to allies Israel and Ukraine, anger erupted.
Utah Sen. Mike Lee was one of those who mocked the agreement the most. He also seemed to call for a change in his party’s leadership after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell oversaw the deal with Senator Charles Schumer. In November 2022, McConnell, the longest-serving Democratic senator in Senate history, prevailed over a leadership challenge with 37 to 10 votes.
This feels like a complex functional joke. It’s not amusing, though. No even close. I find it incomprehensible how any Republican would consider this to be a wise decision or anything other than an absolute catastrophe. He wrote on X,” WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP —NOW.
Senate leadership “messed this up — and screwed us,” he wrote in a different post. They insisted that we would be stupid and perhaps immoral NOT to support the bill even as they refused to let us see it for MONTHS while claiming to be negotiating on our behalf. This is a dismissing betrayal.”}]] [[{“value”:”

Within minutes of Sunday’s bill release, Republican senators began to speak out against it. By Tuesday, the opposition had reached a feverish pitch, even within McConnell’s leadership team. Daily Mail:
Donald Trump has already made furious claims that the bipartisan border agreement that is dividing Congress Republicans represents a “death wish” for the party in the year 2024.
The fury erupted in the hours following the release of details on the new bipartisan agreement to give the administration new authority to ‘close the border’ when crossings spike while sending billions for support to allies Ukraine and Israel.
Mike Lee, a Utah senator, was among those who slammed the agreement the most. He even seemed to demand that his party’s leaders be changed after Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority leader, helped oversee the deal between Charles Schumer and the Majority Leader. McConnell is the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate History. He survived a leadership challenge on a 37-10 vote in November 2022.
This feels like a clever practical joke. It’s not funny. Not at all. I cannot understand why any Republican would consider this a good idea, or anything other than a complete disaster. He wrote on X that ‘WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP – NOW.
In another post, he said: ‘Senate Leadership screwed up this — and screwed me.’ They never questioned their position, even though they refused to let us see the bill that they claimed they were negotiating for us — for MONTHS. They said we would be stupid and unpatriotic if we didn’t support it. This is a betrayal that disqualifies you.
