Acne Treatment Products Linked To ‘Known Human Carcinogen,’ Report Claims

[[{“value”:”A new report claims that a cancer-causing chemical is present in some acne treatment products like Proactiv and Clearasil.
According to the report, which was conducted by Connecticut-based laboratory Valisure, Benzoyl Peroxide ( “BPO” ) acne treatment products can contain a lot of benzene.
According to Valisure,” Results from Valisure’s tests show that on-market BPO products can form more than 800 times the conditionally restricted FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per million ( ppm ) for benzene, and the current evidence suggests that this issue extends to BPO products currently on the market,” according to Valisure.
NEW: It has been discovered that acne products sold in the US contain the cancer-causing chemical benzene, according to the Valisure report.

” Higher levels of benzene were found in the air around incubated BPO products as well as inside BPO products, demonstrating that benzene can leak out of some product packages and pose a potential inhalation risk. According to Valisure, incubation of a Proactiv® product at a hot car ( 70°C ) resulted in the detection of benzene in a compact car’s volume of air at 1, 270 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s ( ‘EPA’ ) calculated threshold for increased cancer risk from long-term inhalation exposure to benzene.
according to CNN:
Another acne treatment products that were tested, such as those containing salicyclic acid or adapalene, did not, according to the lab, have the ability to produce high levels of benzene.
According to the American Cancer Society, which was never involved in Valisure’s report, benzene is one of the 20 most commonly used chemicals in the United States, and people are exposed to it “primarily by breathing in air containing it.”
Benzene is a chemical that is created by both natural and man-made processes, and it immediately vaporizes into the air.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can be used to create chemicals for things like plastics and synthetic fibers. It’s even used in a wide range of products, including detergents, dyes, and lubricants.
Volcanoes and forest fires are among the normal sources of benzene. According to the CDC, benzene can also be found in simplistic oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke.
Valisure sent a citizen petition to the FDA on Tuesday, in which the lab described an preliminary analysis of 175 rosacea treatment products that revealed 99 of them contained benzoyl peroxide, and that 94 of those products specifically contained local benzene.
According to validation’s tests on dozens of prescription and over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products, current BPO medications are inherently unstable and can produce inacceptably higher levels of benzene when handled or stored at higher temperatures, which the products may be exposed to during handling by consumers. Benzene may be produced in the finished product and possibly egress into the air. Hence, Valisure requests that BPO-containing products be investigated and the market removed, according to Valisure.

From the New York Post:
Valisure, a testing facility based in New Haven, Connecticut, filed a petition with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, claiming to have tested 66 various products whose main ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, a oral antiseptic found in creams and face washes that are intended to treat pimples.
An “unacceptably great” level of the carcinogen has been linked to leukemia, according to the lab, the amount of benzene found in the products was up to 12 times the amount permitted by guidelines issued by the Food and Drug Administration.
Valisure claimed that “over the counter products as well as those that are sold through prescriptions” can amount to more than 800 times the temporarily restricted FDA concentration limit of 2 parts per mission for benzene.
PanOxyl, Walgreens ‘ acne soap bar, and Walmart’s Equate Beauty acne cream are other products that benzene was found in.
The availability of spokespersons for Target, Estee Lauder, Walmart, and Reckitt was unknown at the time.
When used and stored according to the instructions on the labels,” Reckitt is assured that all Clearasil products are safe,” the company said in a statement released to The Post.
” We work closely with regulators around the world to ensure our products are safe and efficient for their intended use, and safety and quality of our products is our best priority.”

A new report claims that certain acne treatment products such as Proactiv or Clearasil contain a chemical that causes cancer.
The report by Connecticut-based lab Valisure states that Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) acne treatment products can produce high levels of benzene.
Valisure writes: “Valisure’s results show that BPO products on the market can contain over 800 times the FDA concentration limit of benzene (2 parts per million, ppm). The current evidence suggests that the problem is widespread for BPO products on the market.”

“High levels benzene have been detected not only inside BPO products but also in the air surrounding incubated BPO product, showing that benzene may leak out of some products packages and pose a possible inhalation risk.” Incubation of a product Proactiv(r), at 70degC, resulted in benzene being detected in the air of a compact vehicle at a level 1,270 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency (‘EPA’) calculated threshold of increased cancer risk from long-term exposure to benzene.
CNN:
According to the lab, other types of acne treatments, such as those that contain salicyclic acids or adapalene did not seem to cause high levels of benzene.
According to the American Cancer Society’s report, which did not participate in Valisure, benzene is among the 20 most commonly used chemicals in the United States. People are exposed “mainly through breathing in air containing benzene.”
Benzene, a chemical that is produced by both natural and man-made processes vaporizes very quickly into the air.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can be used to create chemicals for things such as plastics and synthetic fibres. It is also used in a wide range of products, including lubricants and dyes, as well as detergents, drugs, and a variety other products.
“Natural sources include forest fires and volcanoes.” The CDC states that benzene is a natural component of crude oil, gasoline and cigarette smoke.
Valisure sent an official citizen petition to FDA on Tuesday. The lab described a preliminary analysis of 175 acne treatments products and found that 99 contained benzoyl-peroxide. Native benzene in particular was detected in 94 of these products.
“Valisure’s testing on dozens benzoyl-peroxide products, both prescription and over-the counter, suggests that current formulations of BPO medications are fundamentally instabile and can generate unacceptably large levels of benzene if handled or stored at temperatures higher than those that the products could be exposed to when being handled by consumers. Benzene may be produced by the product and escape into the air. Valisure has requested an investigation and the withdrawal of BPO-containing product from the market.

The New York Post
Valisure, an independent testing laboratory based in New Haven, Conn., filed a petition to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stating that it had tested 66 products whose main component is benzoyl-peroxide, which is a topical antibiotic found in creams and facial washes designed to fight pimples.
According to the lab’s findings, the amount benzene in the products was up to 12 times higher than the guidelines set by the Food and Drug Administration. This is an “unacceptably” high level of this carcinogen that has been linked to cancer.
Valisure stated that both over-the-counter and prescription products “can form more than 800 times the conditionally limited FDA concentration limit of two parts per mission forbenzene.”
Other products that were detected to contain benzene include PanOxyl acne soap bar from Walgreens and Equate Beauty acne treatment cream by Walmart.
Target, Walmart, Estee Lauder and Reckitt did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The company told The Post that it was confident all Clearasil products are safe when used and stored according to the instructions on their labels.
Our top priority is the safety and quality of our product. We work closely with regulators all over the world to ensure that our products are safe and effective.
