The rolling hills north of Salisbury Plain are a gloomy scene with countless sheep grazing on securely grazed pasture and vast agricultural fields.
With the aid of wildflower banks and newly planted trees, Lower Pertwood Farm has become more committed to organic farming, growing oats, barley, and other crops, as well as promoting the breeding of exceptional corn buntings and other wildlife.
The owners are turning to farming nature rather as the wildlife in Wiltshire continues to decline and the farm’s profits decline amid an exceedingly unstable climate.
The 2, 800- acre agricultural farm begins its transformation this spring into the biggest grassland rewilding project in southwestern England, in an attempt to restore declining plants, insects and endangered species including cuckoos, grasshopper warblers, and turtle doves.
The” Pertwood Plain” project, masterminded by Restore, a land management company specializing in huge- scale restoration led by the naturalist Benedict Macdonald, will eventually see lower densities of pigs and cattle roaming free to recreate flower- rich chalk grassland. A mosaic of grass and scrubland teeming with insect life will result from this natural grazing, along with other interventions like adding green hay and brash piles where birds perch and produce seeds from the soil.
” The chance for surprises is quite large here. The soil wants to be plentiful, it wants to be rich with wildlife”.
Visitors could also enjoy the reintroduction of endangered species, such as the charismatic red-backed shrike, which was properly declared extinct as a breeding bird in Britain in the 1990s.
” It’s enormously exciting”, said Macdonald. ” Salisbury Plain on the horizon is like a giant, completely seed bank of species, some of which—such as the reintroduced great bustard—might naturally explore Pertwood as it begins to recover”.
Tamara Webster, the director of the family- owned farm, said:” We have been looking, about involuntarily, for a long time for an all- embracing blueprint for the future. One that can deliver environmental restoration, really sustainable food production and achieve financial stability and profitability. We were given the task of commissioned, thorough analysis by Restore, and we are very excited about what we hope to accomplish up.
In 2022, this large arable farm on grade 3 farmland ( a measure of good to moderate growing soils ) made £179, 000 profit ( about$ 226, 000 ). The following year, it posted a £180, 000 loss ($ 227, 300), spending £135, 000 on fertilizer, £65, 000 on muck and slurry, £43, 000 on red diesel and losing £113, 000 on farm machinery depreciation.
The rewilded farm will nearly eliminate fertilizer and these additional costs and sell off its pricey machinery. The staff numbers are anticipated to remain the same, with some people still working for fresh positions, such as grazier. Generally, rewilded estates employ more people than normal agriculture.
As investors bank on speculative future revenues from carbon and biodiversity credits and payments for biodiversity net gain ( BNG ), an increasing number of traditional farms are turning to nature regeneration. Developers are legally required to “buy” or establish healthy areas in this context to make sure that every fresh housing estate promotes a healthy environment.
Pertwood is putting away a small 50 acres for BNG and will continue to produce organic beef and pork. However, the government’s countryside stewardship scheme’s “wood pasture” funding option has made the transition financially easy. This guarantees the farm annual payments of £300, 0000 ($ 379, 000 ) for 10 years.
Farmers who have been hesitant to totally stop farming and transfer land to forestry to sequester carbon are now using the wood pasture funding. Farmers can continue raising low-density livestock while allowing brush and woods to effortlessly regenerate and spread over fields to create a mosaic, which benefits a variety of species and reduces carbon emissions.
The lead ecologist at Restore, Matt Collis, who studies soil health and biodiversity at Pertwood, said:” Sedimentary grassland often has 50 or 60 plant species in a few square meters. It is very exciting to get that close to its natural peak. The chance for unexpected events is pretty high here. The soil wants to be plentiful, it wants to be prosperous with wildlife”.”}]] This story was originally published by the Guardian and is reproduced these as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.
