[[{“value”:”Following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, two of the fastest U.S. defense cargo ships are stranded in the Port of Baltimore.
” The Algol- class ships SS Antares and SS Denebola, known for their higher speed and cargo capacity, are among those stuck”, Marine Insight reports.
” All ship movements were suspended in the Port of Baltimore, along with two more reserve sealift ships, when the bridge collapsed”, the outlet added.

From Marine Insight:
The stranded vessels, SS Antares and SS Denebola are part of the Ready Reserve Force ( RRF ) fleet administered by the Maritime Administration. These vessels go through an activation procedure that lasts typically five to ten days, which is crucial to military operations.
With top speeds of up to 33 knots, the Algol- class ships—first constructed in the 1970s—outperform standard cargo ships by a wide margin.
But, concerns about their aging and the difficulty of keeping up their steam propulsion systems from the Cold War still exist. To avoid having financial repercussions and to maintain emergency preparation, the Biden administration emphasizes rebuilding the navigation channel.
The Algol class ships are” some of the fastest cargo ships of their standard size anywhere in the world,” according to The War Zone.

The War Zone noted:
Ships moving in or out of the Port of Baltimore are still subject to an indefinite suspension at the time of writing because of the incident yesterday, which is even still being investigated. Six members of a construction team that were constructing the bridge at the time the Dali struck it are then believed to have passed away. Two additional workers from that team were rescued, one of whom was hospitalized. Authorities claim that a mayday call from the crew of the Dali prevented a larger disaster and that there have n’t been any additional reported casualties. The Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapsed section is where the ship is pinned, and it has suffered severe damage. What the potential timelines for clearing the channel and fixing the bridge are doomed.
As concerns grow about the impact of the bridge collapse on the local economy and global supply chains, four US defense cargo ships are currently stranded in Baltimore.

” According to CEO of GCaptain and maritime journalist @johnkonrad, four Ready Reserve Force ships are stuck in the port — the SS Antares, MV Cape Washington, MV Gary I. Gordon, and the SS Denebola. He claimed that while a war might start, the four ships being stuck are a “huge problem” but not much of a problem if the coming months are quiet, according to Breitbart Pentagon correspondent Kristina Wong.

Per Breitbart:
The Department of Transportation has been unable to provide answers regarding the nation’s National Defense Reserve Fleet, a fleet of ships that could be used to support the defense in times of war or emergencies, but the organization has been unable to do so.
As of January 31st, 2024, there were 90 ships in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, with 53 of those ships being members of the Ready Reserve Force ( RRF ). RRF ships are Maritime Administration vessels commissioned to meet U.S. martial surge sealift requirements.
Six of those RRF ships — all roll- on/roll- off cargo ships — are assigned to Baltimore, according to the list. Those include the SS Antares, the MV Cape Washington, the MV Cape Wrath, the MV Charles L. Gilliland, the SS Denebola, and the MV Gary I. Gordon.
The DOT has not responded to the request for information on how several NDRF and/or RRF ships were stuck in Baltimore, but Breitbart News did.
At a White House press conference on Wednesday, deputy coast guard commander Peter Gautier claimed that there were” about a dozen ships” still in the port, with the majority of those being vessels with unusual flags. Nevertheless, he added”, There are a number of Maritime Administration ships that are there as well. According to Bloomberg, there were at least 21 ships in the port.”}]] [[{“value”:”

Breitbart News asked the Department of Transportation to provide answers about the National Defense Reserve Fleet, a fleet of ships which could be used by the military in times of war or emergency. However, the agency was unable to do so.
According to a list of inventory maintained by the DOT as of January 31 2024, 90 ships will be part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet. Of those, 53 will be part of the Ready Reserve Force. RRF ships are Maritime Administration (MA) vessels assigned to support U.S. surge sealift requirements.
