CDC Issues Warning For Tap Water

[[{“value”:”Due to rising cases of deadly brain infections, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) advised against using tap water for nasal rinsing.
Amoeba entered the brains through unsafe tap water, according to Daily Mail.
The common health agency reviewed” 10 patients who reported performing bronchial rinsing before becoming ill” in a report released on Tuesday.
” All were immunocompromised, 7 had chronic sinusitis, and some used tap water for nasal rinsing”, the report read.

Daily Mail reports:
Three of those people died from the infection brought on by using tap water in decongestant pots for oral rinsing. Seven more people were hospitalized after a serious illness.
Acanthamoeba can be found in more than half of US tap water samples, including those found in lakes, swimming pools, tap water, and heating and air conditioning units.
When a person is flushed into the nose, the brain can become exposed to unhygienic tap water. Researchers used the findings to urge people who rinse their noses to use boiled, barren, or filtered water.
For the latest study, ten patients ranging in age from 32 to 80 noted oral rinsing before becoming infected with Acanthamoeba. Seven were female, and three were adult.

The Daily Mail reports that although the brain infection is uncommon, between seven and ten percent of people survive.
From The Epoch Times:
According to the report, acanthamoeba can lead to keratitis, an eye infection that does not spread to different parts of the body. However, they can also lead to a wide range of severe human infections, including granulomatous amebic encephalitis ( GAE), an infection that causes severe brain and spinal cord inflammation, typically in those with a weak immune system.
All ten patients were now immunocompromised. Additionally, they all claimed to have rubbed their nasals before getting sick. Three of the patients who received the diagnosis of GAE passed away.
The researchers noted that two other patients performed it as part of a purifying ritual while seven patients reported using nasal rinsing to relieve chronic sinusitis symptoms. At least four patients reported using tap water, and one patient also reported using sterile water after being submerged in tap water.
Scientists have spent years trying to understand precisely how people become infected after the initial acanthamoeba infection was discovered in 1956. The CDC believes that the combination of unhygienic tap water and routine oral rinsing is most likely to be to blame for the problem after reviewing patient cases over the past decade.
” In these 10 case- patients with aggressive Acanthamoeba infection, nasal rinsing may have been the transmission route. Although the duration and frequency of oral rinsing practices varied, the majority of patients had been rinsing for months or even years. The risk of infection increases with ongoing exposure, even though amebae could potentially be introduced during any rinsing encounter. The CDC wrote in its conclusion that at least half of the patients in this case series used tap water to rinse their oral passageways.
A recent study found that 33 % of US adults believe tap water to be sterile, and 62 % of US adults believe it to be safe for rinsing sinuses, despite the presence of Acanthamoeba and other biofilm-associated amebae in 50 % of US tap water samples. The report added that cautioning against using unboiled tap water for nasal rinsing may be effective in preventing aggressive Acanthamoeba infections, especially among impaired hosts.”}]] [[{“value”:”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned against using tap-water for nasal rinsing because of the increasing cases of deadly brain infections.
Daily Mail reports that unsanitary tap water was used to rinse nasal passages, introducing amoeba into the brain.
In a report released on Tuesday, the agency for public health reviewed “10 patients who had nonkeratitis Acanthamoeba infections and reported nasal rinsing prior to becoming ill.”
The report stated that “all were immunocompromised. Seven had chronic sinusitis and many used tap-water for nasal rinses.”

Daily Mail reports
Three of these people died from an infection caused by the use of tap water to rinse nasal rinsing devices like neti pots. Seven other people were hospitalized with severe illnesses.
Acanthamoeba is found in tap water, lakes, swimming pools and heating and cooling units in the US. It has been detected in more than 50% of US tap samples.
When a person rinses their nose with unclean tap water, it can reach the brain. Researchers urged people to rinse their noses with boiled, sterile or distilled water after the findings.
In the latest study, 10 patients aged between 32 and 80 years reported nasal rinsing prior to Acanthamoeba infection. Seven of the patients were male and three were female.

According to the Daily Mail the brain infection has a survival rate between seven and ten percent.
The Epoch Times
According to the report, Acanthamoeba may cause keratitis. This is an eye infection that does not spread elsewhere on the body. They can also cause severe human infections such as granulomatous encephalitis, which causes severe inflammation of the spinal cord and brain. This is most common in people with compromised immune systems.
All ten patients had already been immunocompromised. All ten patients reported nasal rinsing prior to becoming ill. Three of the six GAE cases were fatal.
Researchers noted that seven patients reported nasal rinses to relieve chronic sinusitis symptoms. Two other patients used it as a cleansing ritual. Four patients reported using tap water. One patient also reported using sterile distilled water after submerging the device in tap.
Scientists have been trying to determine how people get infected since 1956, when the first acanthamoeba was discovered. The CDC found that a combination of unsanitary water and nasal rinses is likely to blame for the problem.
“Nasal rinsing could have been the route of transmission in these 10 cases-patients who had invasive Acanthamoeba infections.” The duration and frequency of nasal rinses varied, but the majority of patients had been doing it for months or years. While amebae can theoretically be introduced at any time during rinsing, the risk of infection increases with continued exposure. The CDC concluded that “at least half of patients in this series used tap water to rinse their nasal passages”.
“Even though Acanthamoeba, other biofilm-associated amebae, and other amebae were detected in >50% US tap water samples, it was reported that a recent survey found that 33% US adults believed that tap water was sterile and that 62% thought that it could be used to rinse sinuses. The report said that educating people against the use unboiled tap water to rinse their nasal passages may be effective at preventing Acanthamoeba invasive infections, especially among immunocompromised individuals.
