Feds Find Flint, Michigan, In Contempt Over Lead Water Pipe Crisis

U.S. District Court Judge David Lawson stated that the city had failed to comply with an order from the court that detailed the steps the city needed to take in order to replace old lead pipes.

Judge David Lawson stated in his decision on Tuesday that Flint was found in civil contempt due to their failure to meet the deadlines for pipe replacement as specified in his order from February 22. The city had initially committed to replacing the pipes before the year 2600 in an advertisement. Lawson made his decision after a hearing in June 2023 regarding a motion for contempt filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, and Concerned Pastors for Social Action the month before. In his ruling, Lawson stated that the City had not followed the Court’s orders in multiple ways and did not have a valid explanation for its actions.
