First Illegal Migrants Receive Prepaid Debit Cards In $53 Million Pilot Program

[[{“value”:”A$ 53 million pilot program that offers paid debit cards to illegal immigrants has been launched in New York City.
A few recent arrivals in the Big Apple were apparently given the first batch of debit cards by city officials on Monday, according to Fox News.
The mayor’s office confirmed that the program will offer migrant families of four with two under-five children up to$ 350 per week after their stay is over.
Next week, the program is anticipated to reach about 115 families.
PIX 11 reports:
New York City will implement a plan to offer bank cards loaded with cash to immigrant families to purchase baby and food supplies.
The pilot program, which drew criticism before also being rolled out, will put cards in the hands of migrant families beginning Monday, PIX11 News has learned.
By the end of the next week, the city will use a company called MoCaFi to distribute cards to 115 hotels. About 460 migrants, including many children, will be fed by the city in this manner.

The paid cards may only be used at bodegas, grocery stores, supermarkets and convenience stores. According to Adams ‘ office, immigrants who are eligible for the program must sign an affidavit declaring that they will only use the funds to buy food and baby supplies, or that they could lose access to the funds.
Also, the mayor’s office confirmed that the pilot program was launched using a phased approach, starting with only a few hotels. Officials from the city have stated that the cards will be used over the course of a week and that their usage will be monitored.
The cards are reportedly being given to immigrant families who are staying at hotels that are being used as emergency shelters at the city’s arrival center, the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan.
Mobility Capital Finance, a company based in New Jersey, has worked with the city to implement the program.
