The hearing on this argument and two pretrial motions filed by David Shafer, the former chair of the Georgia Republican Party, is scheduled for Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court before Judge Scott McAfee. Shafer’s lawyers claim that when he and other state Republicans signed a certificate stating that Trump won the 2020 presidential election in Georgia and declaring themselves the state’s “duly elected and qualified” electors, they were acting within the bounds of the law. McAfee is continuing with the legal proceedings despite plans by Trump and other defendants to challenge the District Attorney’s qualifications via the Georgia Court of Appeals. Earlier this month, the judge denied the defense’s attempts to disqualify Willis and her office due to her romantic involvement with special prosecutor Nathan Wade. However, he did permit the defendants to appeal his ruling. In August, Willis secured an indictment against Trump and 18 others, alleging their involvement in a scheme to unlawfully overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, which Republican incumbent Trump lost narrowly to Democrat Joe Biden. All the individuals accused were charged with breaking Georgia’s broad anti-racketeering law, in addition to other supposed offenses. The court proceedings are overseen by Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee in February. On March 27, 2024, in Atlanta, a photo was taken by Brynn Anderson and released by the Associated Press. Four individuals have admitted their guilt after coming to agreements with the prosecution.
