Vice Prime Minister Kamala Harris called for an instantaneous ceasefire in Gaza. “The threat of Hamas poses to the people of Israel must be eliminated.”

She went on to suggest that the United States might have to take steps “short of military action” if Israel didn’t start to stop its attack on the district. Harris stated in Selma, Alabama on Sunday that due to the large amount of suffering in Gaza, there needs to be a prompt halt in hostilities for a minimum of six weeks, as is currently being discussed. Harris showed up at the Edmund Pettus Bridge to give a speech on the anniversary of the event known as “Bloody Sunday.” This will lead to the release of the hostages and the delivery of a substantial amount of assistance. Harris stated that building something long-lasting is necessary to ensure Israel’s security and respect the rights of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom, and self-determination. Her comments followed Biden’s tempered optimism for the six-week cease-fire and his approval of sending humanitarian aid to Gaza. A White House official reported that Israel has mostly accepted the cease-fire proposal, which would require agreement from both Israel and Hamas militants. Harris’ call for a cease-fire comes after over 100 people were killed and 750 were injured by the Israel Defense Forces while lining up for food aid. The Israeli government needs to take additional steps to substantially boost the amount of aid being provided. Harris emphasized that there are no excuses and echoed President Joe Biden’s commitment to providing urgent assistance to Palestinians in need.
