Maddow mentioned that discussing internal matters as news can be uncomfortable. She mentioned that everyone in the building, including journalists, senior staff, and producers, all had a similar opinion about hiring the former Republican National Committee chair. However, she was impressed to see the executives and leadership listen to their feedback and change their decision based on their respect for the team’s perspective. Maddow, along with other MSNBC and NBC stars, publicly expressed their disapproval of McDaniels’ hiring after it was announced. On TV, journalists criticized McDaniels for his track record of dishonesty and backing Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud. Maddow gave a lengthy rebuke on Monday, objecting to the decision to hire someone who has attacked journalists and is part of a campaign to undermine the government. NBC announced on Tuesday afternoon that it had changed its decision. Cesar Conde, the chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, sent an email to staff expressing regret for disappointing them and acknowledging their concerns. Rachel Maddow commented during a segment with Joy Reid that admitting to a mistake is a sign of strength, emphasizing that the issue is not about hiring someone affiliated with the Republican party or with ties to Trump. This case was unique due to Ms. McDaniels’ participation in the election interference activities. I’m thankful that our leaders were brave, strong, and resilient enough to make the courageous decision. Please show your support for HuffPost.
