Donald Trump visited Ohio on Saturday to rally his supporters and encourage them to support his chosen Senate candidate in a highly competitive primary race. The outcome of this race could determine the GOP’s chances of gaining a Senate majority. Trump is backing businessman Bernie Moreno in a three-way race against Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen., which is proving to be a close and pivotal contest. Trump criticized Dolan, who seems to be Moreno’s main competition, for changing the team name from Indians to Guardians in 2021, a move that some conservatives viewed as giving in to demands from “woke” activists. At a rally organized by the pro-Moreno Buckeye Values super PAC near Dayton, Trump called Dolan easily influenced by the left and accused him of trying to imitate Mitt Romney, labeling him a RINO. Trump stated that he believes Mitt Romney is a hero to Moreno. Trump’s support of Moreno marks an important test of his influence in politics since the 2022 midterm elections, which were not entirely successful for Trump and the Republican Party. The Republicans did not regain control of the Senate primarily because Trump supported radical candidates in important swing-state primaries. In Ohio that year, there was a significant deviation when Trump supported J.D. Vance, the author and venture capitalist who won an open seat after a competitive primary election. Vance supported Moreno from the beginning and attended the rally to show his support. He condemned the actions of the establishment RINOs towards Moreno as “disgraceful.”
