A Georgia judge ruled Fani Willis can stay on the case, after it was revealed that she had a romantic relation with a prosecutor.
Ashleigh Merchant, the attorney who led the push to have Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis removed from the Georgia election interference case involving former President Donald Trump, presented her findings on March 6 to state legislators about Willis’ alleged conflict of interest due to her romantic relationship with a special prosecutor. Ex-President Donald Trump requested permission from a Georgia judge to dispute the judge’s ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue handling the criminal case against Trump, in which he stands accused of trying to sway the outcome of the 2020 election. The judge, Scott McAfee, made the decision to keep Willis on the case after one of her prosecutors, Nathan Wade, resigned due to the disclosure of a romantic relationship between him and Willis. Trump and some of his co-defendants claim that Willis received benefits from hiring Wade in the form of dates, trips, and meals paid for by Wade. McAfee did not find any proof of a conflict of interest, but stated that Willis’ relationship with Wade showed a significant error in judgment. In the court documents, attorneys representing Trump and his co-defendants emphasized the significance of having Willis removed from the case, believing it to be a crucial aspect. McAfee countered by stating that there are alternative measures, such as Wade resigning, that could address the issue without extreme actions. Trump’s aim in appealing the judge’s decision is to potentially postpone the case, a strategy he is employing as he pursues the presidency in the current year. In August, Willis accused Trump and his co-defendants of being involved in a plan to unlawfully overturn the 2020 election. Trump has been indicted for the fourth time.
