The Biden administration criticized congressional Republicans for including a provision in a recent spending package that prohibits U.S. embassies from displaying the LGBTQ+ Pride flag in certain situations. The president ultimately signed the $1.2 trillion package on Saturday, resolving a lengthy dispute between Republicans and Democrats and averting a potential government shutdown. The massive bill, which contains over 1,000 pages, contains language that specifically addresses the symbol, stating that no funds allocated by Congress can be used to fly or display a flag over a Department of State facility. The White House stated that President Biden believed it was wrong to misuse the process that is necessary to keep the government functioning in order to target LGBTQI+ individuals. The administration opposed the inclusion of this policy and will work with Congress to try to repeal it. Civil rights groups suggest that the provision may still allow for the display of LGBTQ+ pride flags in other ways inside embassy buildings, with the only restriction being that they cannot be flown outside the building. Displaying a flag in various locations such as inside or outside of workspaces is not a significant achievement. Promoting it as such is deemed as sad. – Brandon Wolf tweeted on March 22, 2024. Several U.S. embassies started to exhibit the pride flag under the administration of former President Barack Obama. However, his successor, former President Donald Trump, prohibited this practice during his time in office. Shortly after taking office, Biden overturned the decision. Many embassies have since shown the symbol in June for Pride Month. House Speaker Mike Johnson praised the decision in a recent private meeting with other conservative lawmakers, Bloomberg reported. The GOP has focused on queer individuals across the country, introducing numerous bills in the past few years that aim to restrict trans kids, ban drag events, and prevent teachers in certain regions from talking about their sexual orientation in schools.
