FACT-CHECK: Did Kristi Noem Really Shoot Her “Worthless Dog”?

[[{“value”:”Time for a Fact- Check!
I had to stop and check it out as soon as this was going popular online.
How’s the claim:
‘ I hated that dog ‘: Kristi Noem recalls gunning down family’s ‘ worthless’ pup – Raw Story https ://t.co/TBnaqqLIp2

Ok, but did she actually “gun down her family’s stupid pup”?
Well, but if you were to read that headline all over, you might not be thinking much.
The claim comes right out of her memoir, No Going Up: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.
Here’s an excerpt from the book:
” I hated that dog”, Noem wrote, adding that the 14- month- ancient wirehair pointer was “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog”.
What transpired that terrible day is explained by RawStory:
“]Cricket ] grabbed one chicken at a time, crunching it to death with one bite, then dropping it to attack another”, she wrote, comparing the dog to” a trained assassin”.
” ]She ] whipped around to bite me”, Noem wrote, adding that Cricket was” the picture of pure joy” throughout the incident.
” At that moment”, Noem wrote,” I realized I had to put her down”.
Noem claimed Cricket was led to a gravel pit after Noem retrieved her gun.
” It was not a pleasant job”, she writes,” but it had to be done. And when it was over, I realized there was still more work to be done.
She therefore details how she dragged a “nasty and mean” male goat from her family to a nearby construction crew who watched her kill both animals before her children were taken off by a school bus, killing one of them.
” Kennedy looked round confused”, Noem wrote, describing her daughter’s reaction.” ‘ Hey, where’s Cricket?'”
Grok explains more:
Indeed, Kristi Noem claimed that she shot her dog, Cricket, and explained her actions in an excerpt from her forthcoming book. According to the information provided, Noem described the dog as “untrainable”, “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with”, and “less than stupid … as a hunting dog”. After the dog bit and attacked one of the local families ‘ chickens, she explained how she made the decision to put Cricket down by shooting her in a gravel pit. Noem defended her actions as part of farm life’s tough realities, despite the controversy it has sparked online.
So…did she shoot the dog?
Well, by her personal writings.
Was it, however, some tranquil golden retriever that she simply unloaded a clip into?
Barely.
However, Legacy Media hopes you have that picture in your head.

It’s time to check the facts!
I saw it going viral on the internet today and had to check it out.
Here’s what the claim is:

‘I hated that dog’: Kristi Noem recalls gunning down family’s ‘worthless’ pup – Raw Story https://t.co/TBnaqqLIp2

Okay, so did she really “gundown her family’s useless pup”?
You’d be wrong if you just read the headline.
The claim is straight from her memoir No Going Back: What’s Wrong With Politics and How to Move America Forward.
Here’s a sample from the book.

Noem wrote: “I hated the dog.” She added that the 14-month old wirehair pointer is “dangerous for anyone she comes in contact with”, and “less-than-worthless as a hunting canine”.

RawStory explains the events of that fateful day.

She wrote that “[Cricket] would grab one chicken at a moment, crunching it into death with a single bite, and then drop it to attack another,” comparing the dog to a “trained assassin.”
Noem wrote that Cricket was the “picture of pure joy” during the entire incident.
Noem wrote: “At that point, I realized I had put her down.”
Noem told Cricket that she had retrieved her gun, and they were heading to a gravel pit.
She writes: “It wasn’t a pleasant task, but it had to be completed.” After it was done, I realized that another unpleasant task needed to be completed.
She then recounted how she killed a male goat, a “nasty” and “mean” one that hadn’t been castrated, and dragged him to the gravel pile. Afterward, she realized that a construction crew nearby had watched her kill both animals before dropping off her children by a bus.
Noem wrote that Kennedy looked confused as she described her daughter’s response. “‘Hey, where’s Cricket?'”

Grok explains more:

Kristi Noem has confirmed that she shot her dog Cricket and explained her decision in an excerpt of her upcoming book. Noem, according to the information provided in the book excerpt, described Cricket as “untrainable,” dangerous to anyone who came into contact with her,” and “less-than-worthless” as a hunting companion. She also explained how she decided to shoot Cricket in a gravel pile after the dog bit her and attacked the chickens of a local family. Noem defends her actions, saying that they are part of the harsh realities of farm life.

Did she shoot the dog or not?
Yes, according to her own writings.
Was it a peaceful golden retriever into which she unloaded the clip?
Hardly.
