ABC13:
On Saturday, hundreds of people waited in line at the IRS office on South Gessner to receive walk-in assistance before the Monday deadline for tax filing.
The center closed early and many people were left without the answers or help they needed to submit their taxes by the deadline of Monday.
According to the IRS the delays were caused because too many people showed up. Houston police were also called to help control the crowd.
The IRS released a press release to ABC13 on Monday about the identification issue, and what is being done to help those who tried to go to the IRS on Saturday but were turned down:
“To help taxpayers in Houston, IRS representatives will call people who provided contact information this week and we were unable to serve on Saturday. We are also adding more staff to our phone lines and working to fully staff all of our offices in the coming week. If you have received a letter from the IRS requesting an in-person meeting, please review your tax returns to ensure that they are accurate. Then call the number to schedule an appointment. These taxpayers don’t have a deadline to verify their identity.”
