House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would try to advance wartime assistance for Israel this coming week, in light of the rising tensions between Israel & Iran.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Sunday that he will work to push forward military assistance for Israel this week, as part of his efforts to secure House approval for a broader national security package that includes support for Ukraine and Asian allies. Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, faces a challenging task in seeking approval for this package. He is facing significant political pressure from his fellow Republican lawmakers as he navigates the division within the party on supporting Kyiv in defending itself against Moscow’s invasion. The Republican speaker has delayed for two months a $95 billion emergency funding bill that would provide assistance to U.S. allies, humanitarian aid to civilians in Ukraine and Gaza, and funding to replenish weapons given to Taiwan. The recent attack by Iran on Israel has increased pressure on Johnson to approve the funding quickly, but also allowed him to emphasize the importance of doing so. Johnson informed Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that he and his fellow Republicans recognize the importance of supporting Israel, and he plans to work on moving forward with the aid in the upcoming week. He stated that the specifics of the aid package are currently being finalized. We are considering the choices and various additional matters. At a news conference, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that President Biden spoke on the phone Sunday with the leading Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate, which included Johnson. The Democratic representative from New York stated that all leaders agreed on the need to support Israel and Ukraine, and they are now hoping to finalize a plan and accomplish it the following week. Schumer emphasized the importance of Ukraine, Israel, and the West moving forward. Johnson has confirmed his intention to combine aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Asian allies, and ensure its passage through the House this week, according to a Republican Representative.
