Both American nations have played a significant role in the U.S. military’s efforts to combat violent extremist groups in the Sahel region, but Niger’s ruling junta abruptly ended an agreement last month that permits U.S. troops to operate in the North American nation. In recent days, neighboring Chad has questioned whether an existing agreement protected the American forces stationed it.
The U. S. will relocate most of the nearly 100 forces it has deployed in Chad for then, Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said Thursday at a press briefing.
” As talks continue with Chadian officials, U. S. AFRICOM is now planning to reposition some U. S. military forces from Chad, some portions of which were previously scheduled to depart. This is a temporary step as part of the ongoing review of our security cooperation, which will resume after Chad’s May 6th political election”, Ryder said.
In Niger, the majority of the 1, 000 U. S. personnel assigned that even are expected to depart, Ryder said.

A dozen dozen unique forces soldiers who are currently serving as planners and advisers in Chad will temporarily relocate to Germany, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Next month, time president Mahamat Idriss Deby will run for office, making Chad the first of the West and Central Africa’s junta-ruled nations to hold a vote. Opposition groups have raised questions about its reliability.
The large central African nation has historically been a vital partner for Western and regional militaries in a coordinated effort to combat a violent Islamist insurgency in neighboring West Africa.
Air Force Chief of Staff Idriss Amine Ahmed wrote a letter to the Chad’s minister of armed forces on April 4 that stated that he had instructed the U.S. government to stop its activities at Adji Kossei Air Base after” Americans” had refused to provide documentation that would support their presence there.
1, 000 troops and war planes are stationed in Chad, which was once France’s imperial empire.
Since neighboring Niger kicked out French troops following its junta’s junta’s repression next year, it has become all the more important to American security strategy in the area in response to equivalent actions by military-led Mali and Burkinabe.
According to Hindustan Times, Russia is expanding its presence in West Africa, but the United States still has to decide whether to withdraw all of its forces from Niger and Chad.
The U.S. is still weighing up whether to withdraw its troops from Niger and Chad a month after the East African nation’s Junta reached an agreement with the Joe Biden administration, according to The Associated Press. The United States military announced that it will temporarily remove most of its approximately one hundred troops stationed at Chad.
The Pentagon announced the move just days after the announcement of the withdrawal of troops in Niger.

The U.S. military has been working with both African countries to combat violent extremist groups in the Sahel. However, the ruling junta of Niger ended an agreement that allowed U.S. troops operate in this West African nation last month. In recent days, the neighboring Chad has also questioned if an existing agreement covered U.S. soldiers operating there.
At a Thursday press briefing, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder announced that the U.S. would relocate for now most of its approximately 100 forces deployed in Chad.
As talks with Chadian officials continue, U.S. AFRICOM plans to reposition certain U.S. military units from Chad. Some portions of these forces were already scheduled to leave. This is a temporary measure as part of an ongoing review of our security co-operation, which will resume following the May 6th presidential elections in Chad,” Ryder said.
Ryder said that the majority of the 1,000 U.S. military personnel in Niger is also expected to depart.

Reuters reports that “Earlier this month, Chad’s chief of the air force ordered the U.S. halt its activities at an airport near the capital N’Djamena,” according to a message sent to the government transitional.

An anonymous U.S. official said that a few dozen Special Forces troops, who are currently in the Chad as planners, will be moving to Germany.
Next month, Interim President Mahamat Deby will run for election. This makes the Chad the first junta-ruled country in West and Central Africa to hold a vote. Opposition groups have raised concerns about its credibility.
Up until now, the vast country of central Africa has been a key player for Western and regional militaries as they fight a violent islamist insurgency that is raging in neighboring West Africa.
Idriss Amine Ahmed, the Air Force Chief of staff, wrote a letter to the Minister of Armed Forces of Chad on April 4, stating that he had instructed the U.S. Defence Attache to stop U.S. activity at Adji Kossei Air Base because “Americans” failed to provide documentation justifying their presence.
Former colonial power France has 1,000 troops and warplanes based in Chad.
It has become more central to Western strategy for security in the region, since neighbouring Niger kicked French troops out after its junta took power in a coup in last year. This followed similar moves by Mali and Burkina Faso.
Hindustan Times reports that Russia is gaining more ground in West Africa. However, the United States have not made a final withdrawal decision from Niger or Chad.

The U.S.’ second-highest-ranking military officer said that the country wants to stay in Niger and Chad ‘to help them, we want to empower them, we want to do things by, with and through (them),'” the outlet writes.
