Jurors in the hush money trial of Donald Trump are set to start deliberations on Wednesday after being given instructions by the judge. The first criminal case against a former American president involves allegations of Trump attempting to deceive voters in the 2016 election by being part of a hush money scheme to silence damaging stories. “The case revolves around a conspiracy and a cover-up,” said prosecutor Joshua Steinglass during closing arguments that lasted well into the evening. On the other hand, Trump’s lawyer called the main prosecution witness the “biggest liar ever” and insisted on his client’s innocence. The opposing lawyers presented very different views on witness credibility, Trump’s guilt, and the strength of the evidence, hoping to sway the jury in their favor. The jury now has the monumental task of deciding whether to convict Trump, who is facing 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, each punishable by up to four years in prison, before the November election. He has entered a plea of innocence and denied any wrongdoing. It is not certain if prosecutors would pursue incarceration following a guilty verdict, or if the judge would decide to impose that penalty. The possibility of imprisonment remains uncertain. Jurors can choose to find Trump guilty on all charges, declare him innocent on all charges, or return a verdict that includes guilty on some charges and not guilty on others. If the jury cannot come to an agreement after days of discussions, Judge Juan M. Merchan may announce a mistrial. The case involved accusations that Trump and his supporters worked together to prevent damaging stories from being released during the 2016 presidential race by making secret payments, including to a porn actress who claimed to have had an affair with Trump ten years prior. His lawyer, Todd Blanche, informed jurors that President Trump is innocent and suggested that neither the actor Stormy Daniels nor the Trump attorney who paid her, Michael Cohen, are credible sources.
