The group Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom confirmed that they have submitted over 22,000 signatures from all 22 counties in the state to the Nevada secretary of state’s office for validation. If passed, voters will be able to vote on whether or not to amend the state’s constitution to explicitly protect abortion rights, providing a stronger defense against potential legislative efforts to restrict reproductive healthcare. The number of signatures received is almost twice the 22,024 signatures needed to move forward with the process of qualifying for the ballot. The submission was made well ahead of the deadline for the June 2018 collection, showing strong support for abortion rights in Nevada. Lindsey Harmon, president of Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom, noted the significance of the number of signatures gathered in just over three months. Supporters of the amendment displayed signs at a news conference in Las Vegas. In 2024, voters approved a law in the swing state that permits abortion up to approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy, when the fetus is capable of surviving outside the womb. Harmon emphasized the importance of guaranteeing abortion access in Nevada, particularly in light of neighboring states enacting tighter restrictions on the procedure. She stated that Nevada is currently bordered by states that have outlawed abortion following the Roe v. Wade ruling.
