Taylor Rogers claimed that officers “tortured her” as her 9-year old son watched during an arrest in 2021.
In 2021, Taylor Rogers has alleged that police in Santa Fe, Texas, employed unnecessary force by holding her face over a mound of fire ants. This accusation comes from Attorney Randall Kallinen. A woman from Texas has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that police officers restrained her and forced her face down into a pile of fire ants during her arrest in the presence of her child. Last week, body-camera footage was released depicting the event that is the focus of Taylor Rogers’ lawsuit. Initially filed in July, the suit was later amended in January. In August, On September 19, 2021, Rogers, a mother in Galveston County, was taking her 9-year-old son to school when a Santa Fe Independent School District police officer quickly approached her car and instructed her to pull over, according to the lawsuit. She started to feel panicked and subsequently drove in the incorrect direction. The lawsuit stated that Rogers has a mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder due to a past incident involving the officers present that day. It was alleged that Ruben Espinoza, an officer from the Santa Fe ISD Police Department, intentionally crashed into Rogers’ car while her son was inside. A different officer, Christian Carranza, came to the situation and forcefully pushed Rogers to the floor and put her in handcuffs, as described in the legal claim. The claim also mentions that Carranza used an excessive amount of force to twist Rogers’ leg, tied her in a way that caused discomfort, and made her face touch a heap of fire ants, resulting in severe pain throughout her body. There is an advertisement here. In the footage of the arrest, Rogers can be heard loudly screaming and pleading for assistance, claiming that ants were on her face. According to the lawsuit, another officer informed Rogers that her son was present in the car, which caused her to attempt to keep quiet in order to prevent her son from hearing her undergoing ‘torture’.
