Boudreaux has the backing of Richard Grenell, who served as the temporary head of national intelligence under Trump, as well as Republican state Sen. Only 22 of California’s 53 U.S. House seats are held by Republicans, with Shannon Grove from Bakersfield representing Fong’s district. The GOP will maintain control over the district previously held by McCarthy, expanding their total seats in the state delegation to 22. This will slightly strengthen the Republican Party’s majority in Congress by one vote. The House currently has 22 Republicans, 202 Democrats, and five vacancies, including McCarthy’s former seat. The special election only pertains to the remaining time in McCarthy’s term.
