United Methodist Church Repeals Ban On LGBTQ Clergy

The United Methodist Church repealed the 1984 ban on LGBTQ clergy by a 692-51 vote of church leaders during its general conference. The conference, which concludes on May 3, also led to the church rolling back other anti-LGBTQ policy, including a ban on performing gay weddings and funding queer friendly ministries. The conference, which ends on May 3, has also resulted in the church rolling back several other anti-LGBTQ policies, including bans on performing gay marriage and funding queer-friendly ministries.

The church has also reacted to some other anti-LG policies, including those that prohibit gay marriage and funding queer-friendly organizations, as a result of the conference, which ends on May 3.
The passage of these measures spelled a novel era for the church. At the convention in 2019, delegates, made up of both clergy and laypeople, voted 438 to 384 to affirm the bans struck down in this year’s conference and heightened penalties for breaking them. However, 2024 marks the second convention after a split between liberal and liberal Methodists led some parishes to renounce restrictions on LGBTQ worshippers while others resisted.
One-quarter of US Methodist organizations disbanded from the United Methodist Church between 2019 and 2023. Some traditional parishes disassociated from the United Methodist Church as the church’s democratic branch gained popularity, paving the way for progressives to overturn anti-LGBT bans with vehement support.
However, the fight for parity is never over. Wednesday’s repeal does not mandate that all parishes accept gay clergy. Additionally, it would just apply to Methodist churches in the US because local governments in different countries have control over their own governance. Perhaps so, this determined victory sparked a lively response from the audience. The Associated Press reported that ovates rang out outside the convention center as they waved and applauded with teary-eyed eyes.
Guthrie Graves- Fitzsimmons, author of Only Faith: Reclaiming Progressive Christianity, wrote in a NBC News op- ed that these changes should mark a shift in the social understanding of queerness in religion. We can dispel the myth that religion and LGBTQ rights are intrinsically at odds with one another, he wrote. ” Just as the views on LGBTQ rights have risen, so have Christian organizations ‘ theological outlooks on human sexuality and gender identity” have also changed.”}]] On Wednesday, the United Methodist Church repealed its 1984 ban on LGBTQ clergy with an enormous 692–51 vote by church leaders at its public conference.
