President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden pay a visit to the Normandy American Cemetery after participating in a ceremony commemorating the 77th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, June 26, 2021, in Normandy, as reported by the Associated Press. President Joe Biden is scheduled to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery on Sunday, where 1,800 U.S. Marines are buried. In contrast to Donald Trump, who insulted the fallen soldiers and canceled a visit in 2018 due to rain, Biden is choosing to pay his respects to these heroes. He asked his chief of staff at the time, John Kelly, why he should bother going to the cemetery. It is full of people who have lost. “During a later part of the journey, he referred to service members who had passed away while serving their country as ‘suckers’.” Kelly, a former Marine general whose son, also a Marine, passed away in Afghanistan, visited the cemetery instead of Trump. Pictures from the visit reveal that there was no rain as he strolled among the gravestones. It remains uncertain if Biden will bring up Trump’s neglect to pay tribute at the cemetery, where mainly Marines and Army soldiers who perished in the significant World War I Battle of Belleau Wood are laid to rest, when he visits the site on Sunday. The president has been in France since Wednesday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Allied invasion in Normandy that led to the defeat of Nazi Germany. Despite this, Biden has been referencing Trump’s derogatory remarks about the military and veterans during his campaign, indicating that someone with such beliefs is unfit to be commander-in-chief.
