[[{“value”:”On Friday evening, dozens of student activists at Columbia University started another tent encampment on the campus, in an effort to disrupt the university’s future alumni weekend.
The protesters claim that a new tent village, similar to the one that caused national attention when police cruelly cleared it away, is necessary to draw attention to Israel’s involvement in the Israeli-led war against Gaza and what the students perceive as the university’s involvement in Israeli abuses. Hundreds of Palestinians were killed last week by Israel’s airstrikes close to camps designated as protected evacuation zones.
According to Layla, a protester and Columbia student who did not give their final name out of fear of retribution,” This encampment is in response to the death and destruction that we are seeing in Gaza, particularly in Rafah.” ” We feel this is totally unacceptable—and we are calling out Columbia for its complicity in genocide”.

In April, protesters at Columbia created a Gaza Solidarity Encampment on Columbia’s lawn outside the library, pitching tents and raising Israeli flags. The protest coincided with the university’s president, Minouche Shafik, testifying before Congress about antisemitism. The New York Police Department cleared the encampment. Following, federal headlines and days of contentious standoffs. In an escalation, protesters took over Hamilton Hall—the site of previous campus occupations—leading to a clash and arrests as police cleared the building.
A drone was really flying low over the encampment. This campment’s tents had approximately 50 % of their tents removed. Students have remained vocal in demanding that Columbia stop funding its endowment from Israeli-related monetary investments.
